I've done several Triathlons. The last one was in 2000. It was a very hilly course and I did it in 2:19. My weakest point is the swim, just under 30 minutes. I have lots of reasons why I don't swim much. They all make sense to me but basically the cold water isn't that inviting . But, one step at a time, a bit of running and a bit of biking and you never know .

Have you ever read the book "Total Immersion?" I used to teach a masters swim class. The book was a great resource. I think there is some kind of saying, something about, "Those who can, can and those who can't teach" .

Swimming with a wetsuit makes a lot of difference, especially for average swimmers, since it gives them a good body position and therefore makes them faster; plus it keeps you warm!

Yes I have the book "Total Immersion" by Terry Laughlin, as well as one of their video "Freestyle made easy". I do not agree with everything in the book, and in my case have learned a lot more from swimming with our varsity swim team and watching from under water our best swimmers. Moreover, we are lucky since our coach is the WR holder for the 1500m in the 40-44 age group. She does her 1500m in 17:30 !

I remember, when I was a teenager, telling my dad something like "Those who know, act, and those who don't, teach!". My dad didn't appreciate too much since he was a teacher!
Teenagers can be cruel sometimes!

Cheers!

John,

I forgot to mention that 2:19 is very good considering your swim and the hills!
How fast was your 10K run ?

I ended up getting second place in the race. I passed a younger woman, who at the time was on Canada's national team, just at the end of the bike and tried to hang on to her during the run. But I couldn't do it.

Whitehorse is a fun town because you can be a fair athlete and feel pretty fast, the level of competition is great for a "small" town, but probably nothing like what you go against. How many people have been in the races you've done. I imagine being a good swimmer (in an open water race) would be a huge advantage (not constantly kicked in the head?) The race I mentioned above had the swim section in a pool. I've done a few open water ones here and in AK but they are brutal. I did one where half the race I couldn't put my head in the water because I couldn't breath because of the cold, talk about depressing . Later someone told me that you need to keep putting your head under water before the race to get used to the temp. The things you learn the hard way, eh?

14K total today -
2x6K @ 2:08.2 and 2:06.9
2K cooldown

Been thinking about the C2CTC again - and not just the logo this time! John, I think you said at one point that each team would have the opportunity to present one of the monthly challenges?

What about a challenge to row the greatest number of consecutive strokes at your recovery rate during a 30' piece?

I was experimenting with this the other day, trying to make 60' pass by as quickly as possible. My rate for that piece is 2:19 currently, the most number of consecutive strokes that I could pull at 2:19 was only six. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be to maintain that exact pace and I thought it might make for an interesting challenge.

Give it a try and see how you make out.

Good night,
Mark

I'm trying to cut back on my stroke rate (you've got me feeling like an addict Francois )
20k w/ 5X2000@1:52 pace, 1000rest. s/m ~25 .

QUOTE

QUOTE

Been thinking about the C2CTC again - and not just the logo this time! It's a great idea. It's my understanding that every team gets a chance to pick a challenge. I'm pretty sure that is right? I've been thinking about it too. Another idea would be to do a longer distance. It might favor our team a bit. Brian goes through distance like a hot knife through butter and we seem to have a high percentage of light weights. I could be wrong here, but it seems that might favor us a bit. These short ones are for the guerillas out there . I guess we'll just have to put on our monkey suits for February . John.
10+km today

Tried CTC again tonight. I wasn't into it mentally and my body agreed with me after 17 min.
I'll try again and see if my mind and body can get it together.

Later,

Kirk

I have a bad habit of handling down during races, too. But... I think you are the next spot ahead of me in the CTC rankings and I aim to give it another shot this week too. Maybe that can be your incentive - to keep ahead of John's little sister (in law)!

- Krysta

Unbelievable rowing, hosers. We have blown past Paris and we are well on our way to Rome.

Our "rowbot" has decided to take a few turns on his own volition, so it has been a bit of a hassle keeping him on track. I think I have him under control now, but you may see an odd missing row.

My back is getting strong enough that I may be able to pull at 20 spm for 30 min and see if I can move us up in the standings at C2CTC, but you hosers are doing very well!

Check out our Destinations and Distances

Keep on rowin, eh

Jim

We are half way from Paris to Rome!
The folks at Verbier must have wondered what that was blowing past them on the slopes.
This is probably my favourite ski area. (Although I'm happy pretty much happy anywhere with a decent slope and snow ) If you ever have a chance to go, take it!

Those Swiss sure know how to build ski lifts.

Keep on rowin', eh.

Jim

[/QUOTE]

Great job Kirk!!! You made a big gain . I couldn't agree with you more on NOT doing the 30min.20s/m thing again! It's downright brutal. I'm looking forward to Feb. and the 300 meter CTC row. I'm sure it will be painful, but at least it won't last too long!

Finding the time and energy to row this past week has been tough. Murphy's Law and winter have been having a lot of fun at my expense. With two frozen cars, no water because of a frozen water line and two sick kids, plus a lot of time consuming things at work . . . . The good news is that I got everything unfrozen and it's the weekend! Have a good one, team .
