Apparently the good rowers don't know those things.

DooD you just said you've never rowed. pulling on a chain to spin a flywheel to make a number go lower is somthing completley different.

I'd say it was more like the difference between an automatic transmission and a manual (stick shift) transmission in a car.

Ergo rowing is very different to OTW rowing. I know what you are saying about Benton and Schroeder. 2 massive times from 2 guys who row on water as well. But is is a mental thing as well. On the ergo you know that you can just jack up the rate, bomb the slide etc without it having any negative effect (other than the time dropping ). In a boat this is a more difficult thing to do. The recovery still has to be controlled or the boat check (in say a HWT 8) would be massive. Can you imagine the Oxford or Cambridge crews bombing up the slide in the boat, that would be sending 680 - 760 kgs (3/4 of a ton) flying in the opposite direction to the way you want the boat to go. Rates on the water rely on quick hands, sharp catches and strong finishes not on slide speed.

I like the comparison you made Citroen about it being like difference between an automatic transmission and a manual (stick shift) transmission in a car. It just takes some adjustments from someone who can drive both so as they drive either equally well.
