I've been waiting to get some kind of confirmation on my results, but alas the Veteran results seemed to have fallen in a black hole.

It was a very nice venue for the event-a 10 story high atrium capped by a skylight. I got there about an hour ahead of my race, made weight, after the week previous almost eating my way out of the lightweight category. Due to computer problems my race was delayed over an hour. Finally we got seated,I was relaxed and ready determined to row my own race with a goal of a few seconds improvement and a PR of getting under 7:40. I completely ignored all other input-tv sceeens, annoucer, and crowd, counting strokes to myself and oblivious to where I was in the race. I probably rowed 28-31 spm for the most part-sprinting the last minute, and finished with a 7:39.1 according to my monitor. I was very happy and relieved,I got what I wanted and broke the ice of getting back into competition.

Then the fun started. I remember looking up at the big screen seeing my 7:39.1 and two over an identical time. I thought wow I dead heated with someone. Well 4 hours later and some such thing about manual counting our race, the results were posted I now had a 7:27.3 and a silver medal. The next day I thought maybe a handicap was factored in-which for me is 12 seconds. Still it makes no sense for a 50-59 lwt. race to do that.

I'm sorry ranger wasn't there. I would have liked to see him in action-if ever so briefly next to me.

Simon you should definitely do it next year. You've got nothing to lose, and all the experience in the world to gain!

C-force congratulations! I've been there-rowing the 135 lb eight 3 years for West Side in the Canadian Henley back in wooden boat age when Pocock reigned supreme. I'd do anything to trade weights with you for my upcoming Boston Marathon.

Hi SR

Good job on the time I watched that race, what erg number were you on.

Yes, the venue in the CBC building is very good. Did you find it too warm / cold, just curious how the competiters found it.

Next year I will enter, I will be 40 and I am working hard now to improve my core fitness. I'm not overweight and have excersied well and looked after myself for 30 years now, but I just don't have the aroebic capacity that alot of people seem to have. Oh well I'm just doing this for myself and no one else.

Hi Simon

Thanks-I was on erg#2.

I thought the temperature was fine during the race. I was a little concerned it might feel a little hot relative to my chilly basement and C-breeze.

I remember looking up at the skylight before the race.thinking that if I expire,my spirit has any easy exit. In the first 500m,I remember thinking,"God my mouth is dry"! After that it was suspended animation and stealing someone elses coaching a couple ergs down, for myself.

I spent last summer doing a lot of strapless 10 meters per stroke erging. I had a rough fall having shingles and catching back to back colds, effectively cancelling my Cross Country season. I rebounded during the Holiday Challenge and piled up a bunch of meters.

Last week I was a head case bailing out of 3 or 4 2k tests, before backing off my spm and pace, and doing one Friday night about 4 seconds over my PR. Then, I felt confident I could slide under 7:40 come Sunday.

I stayed with my game plan of starting conservatively and finishing like gangbusters. Maybe I could have gone faster but I'll save that for another day. I just wanted to get my feet wet again.

I did a bunch of 'Shuffle Off to Buffalo 2500m races in the early nineties, with the goal each year of just sliding under a 2 min. pace each year. I had a model A at work but couldn't stand doing more than 20 mins at a time-but I could run forever.

My fiance was supposed to do the 40 lwts. race but caught a cold Monday after doing a 15k Sunday. You know you've got the right gal, when upon selling her house in Michigan,a few years ago,she bought a C2 for our house in NY.

We're thinking of doing a couple more this season in NY,Ontario or Detroit. You should consider jumping in this year for the richness of the experience.

I have a vast experience of having my a** handed to me at World Vets 5k track races. Strangely I always come away inspired understanding that the reason I'm getting lapped 2 or 3 times is they have twice the leg turnover.and maybe thats correctable.

Sam Neal
Yes it is-resplendent in my red NY Maritime rowing shirt-state of the art performance material, circa. 1970-100% nylon mesh! They don't make them like that anymore.

Thanks Simon!

You took some great shots of the venue. It was a beautiful day ande a nice ride up the QEW past the dormant starting gates of the Canadian Henley course. Night or day whenever I pass it I aways look down the course.

Sam Neal
