little weed,

You've contributed more than you know.

Sometimes it is not the answers that make the difference. It is the questions. You ask very good questions.

I bet a lot of folks on this board are glad to know that other people are working their way through the same issues. I know I am.

I had my first outing on water at the age of 13. It was sweep rowing (as opposed to sculling). Sculling requires boat balancing skills. Not too difficult after a couple of outings, but I would recommend getting a hang of sweep rowing (one side...as in a pair, four or eight) first before moving to sculling.

Keep us posted on how it went and all the best with it....rowing on water can be soooo much more fun than indoor erg. Again, its all in the mind, and strictly my point of view. I havent rowed on water in the last 7 years. I long to...but unfortunately, I dont live near any water body.

Cheers
Arun

Find erging boring? At first I just rowed to music then I started watching DVD's. Nothing compares though to watching yourself race in a boat on a river, my times went down 10% instantly. I find myself able to maintain a pace throughout a workout now and feel much more "jazzed" at the end. I don't know what software they have for the C2 (I use a WaterRower) but I think NetAthlon by Fitcentric works, you should try it, it is free for 10 days and all you need is a cable to the PC.

sorry, arun. i couldn't remember where i'd mentioned my water outing! someone on the women's forum asked, and i have left my first report there on a thread called 'water outing'.

since then i've had my second outing and i enjoyed that too. i've just written a report of that on the uk site www.concept2.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php? ... tart=15

sorry if i repeat myself!

i went straight into sculling, and i think that's how they like you to learn. yes, balance is THE issue (as well as managing to get both blades at just the right position in the water) and i'm glad i'm learning in non-tippy-over boats; doesn't look cool, but then nor does falling in! it's so difficult to get the blades doing the same thing in the water when your hands are not working symetrically.

how are things going for you so far?

slo_boat
thanks. all i seem to do is ask questions! one day i might have the answers!

steve r
that's fine, it doesn't come over as preaching. you're right - i'm not an athlete and so i do feel happy to allow myself my daily tipple. really i was just trying to say that you don't have to deprive yourself of all your comfort foods etc in order to lose weight, whether it's the odd pizza or big mac that is your thing (actually i have a weakness for pizza too!), an occasional treat can be had. of course, it'll take longer to lose the weight, but there might be more chance of sticking at it if you're not living like a monk. i just wonder what i might have been capable of as a musician, had i not drunk my way through music college!!!!

jane

I unfortunately have no will power (some might say otherwise based on the strict diet I am on and the vigor with which I track things). If I allowed myself those indulgences, I don't think I would stop at this point. Maybe someday later I will be able to eat that one piece of chocolate Until then, back to the monastery. Of course, not all things are verboten... My girlfriend has a hard enough time dealing with my diet and workout schedule... But that kind of restraint is just unnecessary.

Steve

ah, i was the same with cigarettes. i just cut those out completely....no 'cutting down' or 'just one a day' or just 'on social occasions'; that would have been the thin edge of the wedge for me. just NO SMOKING AT ALL! can't stand the smell of cigarettes now. YUK!

jane
