Hello all: Got an unexpected Christmas present; a nifty set of Concept2 slides. They were waiting on the porch yesterday. Broke them out, set them up and tried them out. Rowed a low spm workout (sr between 18 and 24).

Seems to me that the split times were a little faster using the slides than without. I could easily get used to using them every day, but don't think that is a good idea when training for 2K erg competition.

Anybody have any comments?

As for being faster, my best 500 and 1K are on slides but 2K and up are off slides. I know Paul Flack says he is a second per 500 faster with slides on long distance rows but I find that they only seem to help me for the sprints. I'm not much of a sprinter so that may be why they help.

Another good use for slides is that when I feel my back has been overly stressed I will row on slides for a while as they seem to be easier on the back. Right now I have started training seriously for the CRASH-Bs but haven't used the slides yet. I will most likely do some of my shorter intervals on slides just to ease the stress a bit on the old body.

Frank

Just continue for a while and the perception will change.

That said, you now have one of the best accessories available for the Erg, and should be in need of a CBreeze soon to help with staying cool. (shameless plug)

If you are a on water rower, pay particular attention to the movement of the carriages during the stroke, i.e. they should move one way on the drive and the other on the recovery in a consistent and smooth manner, any strange hitches in that movement are a reflection of how you would be varying the hull speed about the system speed in a boat, and the more there is of that the more detrimental it is to moving the boat along efficiently.

You can also compare your force profile between the Slides and the Ground Bound Erg, the more closely they match, the more under control your technique is.
