So I got my Model D yesterday and like it a lot. However it came with this strange black rectangular thing with the letters VHS on it. I have no idea what it can be used for as it wont fit in my DVD player. Anyone know if there is a place to get the tape in a downloadable (DiVX) format? These days a VHS tape is like including an eight track cassette of music to work out to (come to think of it Wild Cherry would be good workout music).

Funny you bring this up. I contacted Concept2 about six months ago and asked the customer service rep if they had any plans to make DVD versions of their erging technique video. He said the idea had merit and he would raise it with others at C2. I do know that they soon plan to sell the "Oarsome Foursome" DVD from Australia from the US website, and that this programs contains guidelines on proper erg form, position, and technique.

Given that C2 is selling thousands of ergs to people with absolutely no experience in proper and safe rowing position and technique, I'd think they'd want to make this kind of information readily available in a usable format like DVD (or a downloadable DIVx file, as you suggested). Perhaps when customers start sending their doctor's bills for back and/or muscle injury caused by bad erg technique to Concept2, they'll give it the attention it deserves.

In the meantime, Xeno Muller (Swiss sculling world champ) has released a 2-DVD set on proper Model D form and technique:

http://www.gorow.com/rowing_coaching_te ... htm
Thanks for the link, I'll have to search around for a review of the DVDs as 40$ is a bit much to spend sight unseen (for that price I could get season four of Futurama to watch while I row).

The first dissects basic rowing form, technique, and position on a Model D (with water imposed in the background so it looks like Xeno is erging down a wide river). He examines all aspects of the catch, drive, and finish, with a lot of attention paid to the arms as well as legs, back, shoulders, etc. Frankly, I learned quite a bit.

The second DVD deals more with upper body conditioning using the C2 erg. If money is a factor (and isn't it with most of us), I'd suggest you forego the second DVD and just buy the first one.
