Best Shoes For Rowing/erging?
Training
#1) Ditch the socks.

#2) File off the sharp edges of the plastic strap with emery cloth or sandpaper.

This keeps the straps from rubbing on your heels.

A long time ago I forgot my running shoes at a race but had a pair of bowling shoes in the car. I ran the race in them and did very well. They were better than most running shoes at the time, and probably better than all regular running shoes these days.

I noticed at the last NY marathon that all the top runners competed in bowling shoes.

I am impressed that you've run a 2:07 marathon, weighing 250 pounds like you do.

That must be a new world record for your size and weight.

Are you sure you didn't wear hiking boots.

Maybe they were hiking boots at the start, and you squished them to bowling shoes by the finish.

I wear white Keds sneakers. You know, the kind that have looked exactly the same since the 50s. Flat sole, thin canvas upper, cheap enough to serve as dedicated erg shoes.

I didn't know you could still get Keds.

Does anybody wear PF Flyers?

Another option is a pair of "water" socks like wind surfers wear. Especially the ones with tops that come over your ankle. No padding in those soles. But they ain't "cheap". work well for the water if your boat doesn't have shoes.

I got new shoes, and I feel like they are really making a difference. I've been able to do times with much less perceived effort. Also, I am not getting the pain around below my ankle that I had with running shoes.

They are Pumas and I would decribe them as a spikeless track shoe. Thin and very flexible sole with lightweight somewhat meshlike upper. They only drawback is that because the upper is thin I feel the hard heel strap of the erg. I've been sticking bubble wrap between my heel and the strap.

I try to erg barefoot/socks and strapless, but often run into another problem I cannot seem to solve. I do not get blisters from the heel strap, but after awhile and with some sweat, my heel keeps slipping out.

Any suggestions?

For rowing barefoot or in socks, I would think PaulS's "swing sling" is worth a try (I haven't tried them).

http://ps-sport.net/SwingSling.htm

I row in old running shoes. I would like to think my rowing times are a result of "the shoes" and that if I didn't have all that unnecessary compression of my power, I could be really, really, fast. But somehow, I just don't think that will prove to be the case.
