Great job, tkleff!. I'm in the same boat, so to speak. I started recently and there's a noticable improvement almost every day.

How were the half marathon attempts? I've been thinking of trying one, but my I think I need a better pad for the seat. Right now, my butt is numb after 60 minutes.

Dave
Hi Dave,

As for half marathon -- I didn't have any trouble with a sore butt. But I did have trouble (particularly on the first half-marathon row) with blisters. On the hands and a nasty one on my heel from a shoe that didn't fit so well.

Solutions: I now wear rowing gloves -- but more importantly, I learned the idea of rowing as if you are dragging your fingers along a table -- this seems to really lessen the blisters of the hands.

As for my feet, I now wear sandals with socks -- this seems to solve nearly all the blister problems for me at least.

But no sore butt -- I suspect if you are working hard, in the end your butt is not bearing the brunt of your weight (either your arms or the lateral force of your legs) are taking pressure off the butt :-).

Hope that helps!

QUOTE(dmhayden @ Apr 11 2005, 07:42 AM)

Great job, tkleff!. I'm in the same boat, so to speak. I started recently and there's a noticable improvement almost every day.

How were the half marathon attempts? I've been thinking of trying one, but my I think I need a better pad for the seat. Right now, my butt is numb after 60 minutes.

Dave

Another PB last night! 5,000m in 19:16.4, shaving more than a minute off my previous time.

I've found that, for me anyway, it really helps on the longer rows to do 500m hard and then back off a little for 500m. That meant pace of around 1:52-1:53 when rowing hard and 1:58 when rowing easier.

Dave
1:21.7 500m today. At least 1 of the two seconds I've picked up on my previous best I'd say was the result of a better start that got me up to speed quicker: although the first 3 pulls were full leg drive, they went 1:45, 1:25, 1:17.

I think.

Round about stroke 4 I kind of lost the ability to focus my eyes enough to read the monitor....

Remind me to experiment with a half-slide/ 3/4-slide/ full slide start one of these days.

New 6k best -- 20:40.4. Beat the old mark by a whopping .8 second exactly.

Well, to be honest, I'd planned to go 10k (!) and had no idea I was trundling along at anything remotely like 6k PB pace until about 5000 m into the row. A boogity boogity last 1k managed to bring me home just under the old mark.

But I'm still a second or so behind Nick Rockliff

Dropped my 2k time from a 7:47.5 down to a 7:43...I know i can break 7:30, I just ahve to train myself to go harder the 3rd 500 meters. Not a great time for a guy my size, but I'm getting better every test.

6'0 150 pounds

First reverse-split 4000 I've ever heard of. Was that a conscious strategy, or an artifact of realizing how much you had left at the midway point?

It’s a session I do sometimes, I set the monitor to 4000m, I then have to beat 14:00 minutes and the 2nd 2000m must be quicker than the 1st.

I did this session with Roy a few weeks ago; it’s harder than it sounds.

Sir Pirate
