The other night at the bike shop when it was slow I was reading an article written by Scott Tinley. He was ruminating on not being as good as once he was, he had just been smoked on his bike by what he had assumed to be a poser, but turned out to be a first rate woman cyclist. What he wrote really struck home to me as I have watched erg scores start to climb over the last few years. "Hadn't I sent that ridiculous competitive urge on a Viking funeral boat alongside the torment it had caused me in those purgatory years when I thought I still needed it, but couldn't deliver it." It's back to fun for me now, Graham you get to be the delivery guy. dennish

You think that you have matured beyond that point......then someone shoots a starting gun.....or yells "GO," and it all comes flooding back. Once a competitor always a competitor. I don't think that I'd want it any other way.

Rick

P.S. I shaved another three-tenths of a second from what I did last Sunday. Did a 6:56.3 this morning in Hull, Massachusetts at the Crash-Bob's.

I'm using it as my sig, but I'll put it here anyway, becuase I think as rowers, we all know this to be true.

"If you push your limits far enough, you'll discover you don't have any."

and on a more humorous note:

“Crew is like crack. It interferes with your sleep. it destroys your body. It introduces you to totally weird people. It's expensive. It takes you away from the real world and into a fantasy land. You start doing it way too much, as you build up a tolerance. You can't stop. You love it, but you know that you shouldn't. You stick with it, because you have this bizzare idea that life would just not be the same without it.”

Not exactly inspirational, but one of my favorites none the less:

"I haven't made a 100,000 mistakes, but I have found 100,000 things that it is not"

-Albert Einstein

I find that the positive inspirational stuff can ease the pain sometimes...

"The only place where winning comes before work, is in the dictionary!"

Paraphrasing Mike Teti (who may have been quoting someone else) as he sent his athletes out to compete:

"Go out there and give it your best, win or lose. And remember, if you lose, your family will still love you, your dog will still love you, and your girlfriend will still love you. But if you win.......they will love you a little bit more."
"A journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step"

I liked this one because can never do something in life without starting and setting a goal.
