Hey,
When I decide to erg early in the morning, around 6 mainly, I usually start to feel very sluggish, weak, and overall just way more tired than I should be. I especially feel weakness in my knees. Does anybody get this and how have you dealt with it? Thanks.

Yes.

I'd suggest a warm up set to get going.

This is the type of thing swimmers do all the time.

How you do this depends on the type of rowing you are used to.

For example, you could do 4x 1:00 with 30s rests in between them,
or 10x 1:00 with 12s rests in between them.

Rest 5 minutes and then go on to your regular routine.

Also be sure to get some food and liquids in some time before you start. Blood sugar will be through the floor after sleeping for 8hrs (well I know mine is) and this will lead you to feel lethargic and sluggish quickly as you use up the remainder of your readily available energy. Also you may be slightly dehydrated in the morning, so some water should also help.

Here is a link to a good article discussing early morning training. It's in relation to cycling, but it is general enough to apply to any morning workout.

The Feed Zone with Monique Ryan: The art of timing- Part II

Ditto on getting up early enough to eat and drink a bit (a big cup of coffee sure helps). I've been rowing early in the morning for years (30+) and feeling weak and clumsy at 5 has never gone away. Jogging a mile or two before erging (along with eating/drinking a little) seems to overcome the feeble legs, though.
Always glad to be done before 6:30. Sunrise looks great!

Arising before the sun comes up, because we're phototropic/diurnal beings doesn't assist matters any. I felt sluggish with 8.5 hours of sleep this morning attempting to erg at 6:20 am--it's completely normal to feel this way.
