I suspect that he knows little about any of those subjects as he has never met either Yvette or me and doesn't use slides or the PM3.

John obviously marches to the beat of a different drummer and I find his posts everything from amusing to infuriating. In this case though I think John is crying for help. What he needs is his own set of slides. John thinks I use them to cheat but the real truth is that they are a whole lot of fun. I tried them when I visited the Concept 2 plant in VT and bought a set on the spot.

These thoughts lead me to believe that John could use a little more fun in his life so I am starting a campaign to collect enough in donations to buy a set of slides for John. I'm not sure how to proceed with the monetary collection yet but my hope is that I will be able to convince Concept 2 to let us call in and make a pledge to the Slides for John Rupp fund. If not I'm sure we can come up with something. Slides cost $258 plus whatever the shipping is to John's home.

To get the ball rolling Yvette and I will pledge the first $20. Come on let's show John that we care!

Frank

Great Idea and very thoughtful!

However I'm not sure if JR would not prefer a PM3 (at least for use when performing a record breaking row) with RowPro (about same $$ amount?). He could then V-ify himself.

I don't think John would want to use a monitor that "starts by itself." Better stick with the slides -- and if John decides that he doesn't want slides, either, we could apply the accumulated pledges to the "Slides for Porkchop Fund". Seriously, I'm willing to put up $20 for the SFJR fund, too. The only thing that worries me is that if we manage to get this done, then we might find him arguing that only rows on slides count as legitimate for the honor board!

Actually, we'd probably see a PASWTT to adjust for the "advantage" the extra weight gives on slides.

How come a thread specially set up for John, doesn't have any messages from him?

Now have John talk about others....

Frank's benevolence and generosity are quite admirable, and serve as a fine example to me and to others.

I do agree with Gary, that rowing, rowing devices and even physical fitness are very much luxury items, and not just a matter of choices but also of opportunity and often primarily of circumstance. There are many in the world who are starving for food, water, homes, health, peace, attention and affection. There are so many facets of life. If only we could not only serve them well but also enjoy them.

The idea of being able to use the slides is quite attractive. I would certainly welcome and appreciate that chance and not begrudge it at all, though am not sure about being so deserving of the honor.

Frank is correct that my feelings about the slides and "V" in the rankings have much to do with the issues per se, and not any thing to do with him personally. Were I to want to put slide times and a "V" in the rankings, it would torment me that others were not able to do the same, and I would not feel good that they weren't. And so, in regards to Frank, perhaps I was looking at my own personal feelings regarding were I to put slide times and "V's" in the rankings, where others were not able to do the same. My apologies go out to Frank for having put him in that position. Certainly both the slides AND the "V" generated by the pm3 are great ideas and I support them 100%, as do I support Frank's efforts on the erg, with rowing, and the rankings.

I understand the work involved with making a separate ranking just for slides, but don't understand why having at least an indication of slide next to slide times in the rankings, and a sort function, would be any problem at all. To have these, I feel, would go much of the way to resolving the differences and making others (if there are others besides me) feel better about having slide times in the same rankings as ergs.

Likewise, the self generated "V" is a great idea. I don't know why it wasn't announced on the forum. The thing is, everyone doesn't have the "V". Even were I to have the "V" for myself, many others do not. In all of these cases I feel these people should have the same opportunity to enter their times in the rankings with a "V". For those who don't have the pm3, then it seems a witness should suffice. As time goes on, more and more people will have the pm3, thus more and more will have the self generating "V" anyway.

As to the benevolence of Frank and Yvette, again I don't know how I would be so deserving of this honor. Were it to be considered a forum experiment, then I would accept that challenge, to see if indeed the slides would be faster for me, and to report the differences. Then I would feel in some way to be earning the use of them. Others might be happy that they have shut me up in complaining about them, the river diverted to another course and direction. In any case I will leave it to Frank and the forum members to decide about that.

Yes, Frank, your 30 minute performance was indeed a good row. Keep up the good work. Cheers and all the best.

And what have you done with John?

No one cares if you shut up about anything which you have experience or useful knowledge regarding, let the river flow. However, when you only have some personal axe to grind, grounded in less than admirable motivation or ignorance, it's likely best to shut yourself up before others have to say anything.

Perhaps now that you have admitted that all of this ranting was due to no more than "complaining", some progress can be made.

John,
I want to thank you for this much nicer posting. Even though we don't all agree on everything, and might have different concerns, methods, etc., it is much better to discuss the differences in a less confrontational, or antagonistic way than is sometimes done here.

David

Remember that while it may have been my idea the slides will be coming from the gifts of many in the rowing community. You should consider this a forum experiment and we all want to hear your results once you get slides.

My next personal goal is to beat my 30 minute time off the slides. It is one of the ways I motivate myself by going back and forth. At my age you are supposed to slow down year to year. I've only been rowing a little less than 3 years but still get faster year to year. Not sure how long I can keep that up but it is fun trying.

You are about my age but have been rowing longer it will be interesting to see if you can use the slides to move you to a higher performance level both on and off slides.

Frank

John, is it too far to Costa Mesa to have a day with Xeno on some slides?

IMO, you deserve that in the same way you deserve Frank's offer. It will help the forum have more real input on matters.

Nice note to Frank, BTW.

(My parents, who still live in Santa Maria, hate driving in LA, and the thought of going to the OC is even worse. Although I did get my mom to Disneyland for my daughters 2nd birthday.)
