Ancho,

Great effort!!! Wow, I'm so impressed. I'm running a marathon on Jan 8th. Really distressed about it, though. I've put a lot of training in (not as much as you)--but have had some problems with pulled hamstrings. I ran my last long run 8 days ago (went 22 miles--in 16 degree farenheit weather) three weeks prior to that, I went 26+ miles. My problem is that now I'm lacking desire to even run. I just took a whole week off of running & focused on finishing the holiday challenge. I'm going to go out for a 5 miler today (I'd much rather get on the erg). Why am I feeling so lethargic about the race now? Did you hit a point like this at the end of your training, and if you did, what did you do about it?

Thanks so much for any help. I appreciate any advice!

Jane
The rest will probably do you good. There's nothing you can do running wise from now until the race to improve your chances in the marathon. It sounds as if you did the work and 'the hay is in the barn'. The best you can do is heal that hamstring as best you can, taper your running and rest your legs. On the otherhand run too much and end up stale, compromised or flat for the race. Goodluck! and let us know how you make out.

Once, when a month after my first Boston, I needed a 3:25 and nailed it at 3:24:48. I didn't know they actually give you up to 3:25:59. I was so fired up after running my 1st Boston, I wanted to requalify right away, and decided do the local marathon a month later.

At a 85F Boston of a couple of years ago I needed a 3:35:59 to requalify and knew I was close turning onto Boylston. I had been trying to negotiate a cramping left calf since mile 24,and ran as fast as I could the last stretch, but came up short in 3:36:10.

By far the worst time situation in marathon was years ago when I was shooting for
3hrs in the local Skylon Marathon. We crossed over into Ft Erie,ON.,and the escort made the wrong turn in the loop through the town. At the 10 mile mark what should have been a 65 min. clocking was 70 something in reality. A moment of crisis should I bail or should I keep going-you work too hard to not have it count, and your mile marks from then on out were all off for gauging your pace. Word got out that they were moving the finish line up to compensate for the descrepancy. I finished in 3:05-not ever really knowing if the adjustment was correct.

[right]

Jane,

Your long runs were too long and depleted your enzymes. There is no reason to run more than 20 miles in training and I think more frequent 2 hour runs are even better than that. As long as you are rested you should do very well. Most of all enjoy it, and let us know how you do.
Which marathon are you running Jane and what will the likely temperature be?

Despite feeling a bit down about it try and keep the running up, nothing too far and maybe just every second day with a bit of light rowing every other day.

You know you can do the distance now, it is just a matter of getting focused on the day and your target of finishing or whatever time you are after.

Good luck and let us know how you get on

John

Jabe:
I think up to now you may have had all your long distance running work.
Just take a few relaxed runs, take care of your hamstrings, and do the rest on the rower.
Have much fun during the race!

Good luck

Thanks all of you for your kind words of support!!! I was really down about this the other day. But had a really successful run -- even with taking a whole week off (of running). I think that this is more of a mental fatigue that anything physical. I can deal with a painful hamstring, but emotionally this cold weather training has been tough!

I'm running Disney so the temps should be a little kinder to me.

Regarding the distance I was running--I have been following the Galloway method as much as possible. So the distances might seem a little long to some, but there are walk breaks and I run at a very slow pace. I must say that I had very few aches and pains following them. I plan on keeping the rest of my runs easy and short, and alternate with some sanity sessions on the erg.

Again--thanks for the support... This has helped me so much! J.
