Training

Post by [old] sharp21 » December 10th, 2005, 11:33 pm

I recently started training to do a triathlon this summer. However, while at work I do not have access to swimming facilities. I was doing 3 runs & 3 bikes a weeks, but now we got a C2 rower.
What are your thoughts on substituting rowing for swimming? I figure I will do Biking one day, Run the Next, Row the 3rd, then repeat with the 7th day to rest...
The fact that you don't have turns in the open water makes it even worse.

My suggestion to you:

Join us and become a rower yourself!

Well they do have triathlons now where the swim is replaced with a rowing portion...
I think Ill incorporate the rowing, but stick to a multisport approach. I also do Taekwondo & the running & biking help build my endurance.

I hope you don't mind if I give you the following advice:

Set the resistance lever to a very low setting and row with a low stroke rate 18 - 24 (mostly 18 - 22) and don't use the foot straps (except in time trials). This forces you to assume a good position (fairly upright, sitting tall).

Obtain the free concept2 uk training guide
http://www.concept2.co.uk/guide/

Happy rowing.

Swimming is a highly technical sport that requires great flexibility and a "feel" for the water. Erging is just trivially simple by comparison.
Also, when swimming freestyle, as you will when doing triathlons, one uses totally different muscles.
If your are not already a good swimmer, I would suggest at least three hours of swimming a week with a coach that could help you with your technique.

Good luck

Francois
