Hi,

I'm interested in using the Concept2 as a cross-trainer for sprint kayaking. I've come across a kayak adaptor from Vermont Waterways. Has anyone used this adaptor? Is it adequate adaptor?

Does anyone have recent experience with the manufacturer? Their web page (and presumably their product) seem very dated.

http://www.paddlemachine.com/

Thanks,
Doug.

I noticed on their site that the latest date they have is "World Championships 2003" so I'd say it may be out of date. The product may be a good idea but it does look rather promative although I can't be judgmental by looks. I'd say send the company a message asking about their product and see if their customer service is helpful and replies in a timley manner. The adaptor is mentioned on c2's site so that does give it some credibility although it does look like it is part of the old iste I can't be sure. Here's the link http://www.concept2.com/update/F2001/vtwaterway.html googling it I also found a few sites that mention it like paddling.com good luck

Hi. I've also thought a lot about the VtW kayak adapter. For me, the biggest problem is the rather outrageous cost. You can get a standalone kayak erg from PaddleOne for $750 (same as the adapter) and then have another machine to use without messing with your erg. Or you could get arguably the state of the art KayakPro machine for $1300, maybe less if you could find a used one (very difficult to find). I've tried the PaddleOne canoe machine and was very impressed with the feel- the only problem is the lack of a monitor (people attach a bike speedo and adjust the wheel size) and the KayakPro machine, which is pretty darn awesome.

I've ultimately decided that just plain erging is great crosstraining, and that I didn't have enough indoor time for two machines. Also I'm a little concerned about mental burnout and repetitive stress injuries from just paddling all the time- I find the switching from one to the other refreshing for the mind and body.

Andrew

To be truthful, burnout & stress concerns was why I bought the Concept2 instead of a kayaking erg. Plus Concept2's strong reputation - both from the company and the support through these pages (forums, rankings, rowpro, ...).

I didn't want to burn-out training all winter on a kayak simulator, and, being a relative novice to kayaking didn't want the kayak-erg to ruin what little technique I had.

When I made the Concept2 decision I had never heard of the KayakPro, though. A member at our kayak club loves the KayakPro, so there is an option for kayakers.

I think you've reconfirmed my decisions though - and will not pursue the adaptor. Nor can I afford the money/space for the KayakPro - my wife would have me sleeping on the couch...

The sale of the Kingsize may even partially fund the new machine. "Always be solution oriented"
