I will participate in a couple of XC ski races this winter but will not be able to train on snow as much as I would like to and I´m not so fond of roller skis. My training is a combination of rowing and running. Has anyone experienced any good effects on xc skiing by using the erg?

Thank you. Just the reply I needed. Now I feel really motivated.

The race I prioritize is Vasaloppet in Sweden (90k classical).

I intend to mix a long row per week with more high intensity rowing. My target is 3 rowing and 3 running sessions per week.

QUOTE(Roland Baltutis @ Sep 6 2005, 01:24 PM)

QUOTE(Rowrunner @ Sep 6 2005, 03:30 AM)

I will participate in a couple of XC ski races this winter but will not be able to train on snow as much as I would like to and I´m not so fond of roller skis. Xc skiing is a good X-trainig for rowing, I suppose it should also work the other way round, as both use all muscle groups, and the cardiovascular demands are similar.
There is part of a chapter dedicated to Xc skiing X-training in the book "Roeing faster", edited by Volker Nolte and highly recomended by Xeno Müller and John Rupp !
Have fun with your 90k!

BTW, I hope I will have my first Xc-Skiing experience this winter in the Pyrinees!

Living in sunny Nottingham the UK doesn't get too much snow! Does anyone know how the real thing compare to the cross trainers in the gym in terms of fitness gains. Obviously the real thing will be much more enjoyable. A bit like comparing erging to water rowing. No comparison in terms of kinesthetics but the ergo is a very good tool for monitoring quality in training.

Cheers,

Paul.

I've lived in Calgary for just over a year now after moving from the UK.

Within a couple of months I bought myself a C2 (at US prices ) and used it during last winter when it was too cold to run or bike.

I will have more time this winter and so I'm going to learn to XC ski. I don't mind downhill skiing but I get bored after a few runs.

I've been advised to learn the classic technique as it provides more opportunity to XC ski further i.e. there are more trails out here groomed for classic.

The World XC champs are here in December so I'll go along to get a few pointers. People tell me that Kananaskis is "the world's best XC region", we'll see. I've run and biked a few of the XC trails when there's no snow around and they are challenging.

Anyway, it's good to see that there's a strong cross-training effect between XC skiing and the C2.
