19y, 69.9kg, 1.78m

i am rowing with the ohio state crew club. i had to take the last half of spring racing season off, sadly, so i'm a bit out of shape. however, unlike a good portion of the team (except for josh schnack, who pulled a 6:00.0 at crash-b this year!) i enjoy the erg a great deal, which would explain me being here.

i'm rambling, but i'm pleased to meet you all.

Hi,
I've changed the avatar pic. Now, for the first time in this site, you can see me rowing on a coxed four.
Fortunately, the picture is small, and you won't see my face during the final
meters of the Spanish cahampionship.
Please note also the strange coincidence between the colour of Polaco's and my shirt, and even the boat seems quite similar...
Keep on rowing/erging!

24 year old female getting back into the erging game after a very bad case of mono that continues to hamper my efforts. I'm working on making lightweight - male lightweight.

I have just registered for the Personal Logbook and this Forum. I am a married male, 35 years old, just a tad over 5'7" (sorry its not metric) and just a tad under 75 kilos.
I have always been very fit aerobically, but took up weightlifting about 4 years ago. Put on about 2 stone, mostly muscle. Had to give this up about 1.5 years ago, lost all the extra weight. Was mostly running or playing football. Too hard on the legs so I took up erging in January 05. Since then I've done a 7:12.7 2K, and a 41:28.8 10K.
I think because of my size I am more suited to the longer row's, I just can't seem to increase my 2K.
I would really appreciate any tips on technique, training or anything you think would benifit a smaller rower. I hope to compete in my first competition in November, but I really need to get under 7min.

Mike Mc Mahon.

I'm 30, 6ft, about 203lbs (93kg, 14st 7lbs), and started erging in Oct 98.

No sporting background at all, so joined a gym in late 96 and started running.

Tried a 1k row as part of a gym triathlon and did 3:23 in Jan 97.

May 97 was another gym tri where a 15 min row was the first leg. I did 4070m. About 1:51 - 1:52 pace.

Oct 98 there was a poster in our gym for the British Indoor Rowing Champs so tried a 2k. I knew I could do 7:30 based on that 15min erg the year before. Did 6:59.6 and fell on the floor.....

Below is a few races from each season over the years to give an idea of how things have gone.

Nov 98 - BIRC - 6:56.1 .... and didn't fall on the floor
Jan 99 - gym 2k challenge - 6:49.6
Jan 99 - gym 2k challenge - 6:46.8 (last day of challenge)
Mar 99 - Cornish IRC 2k - 6:38.2 (I still remember the pain!)
----------------------------------------

Nov 99 - BIRC 99 - 6:39.7 (just split from gf so not really with it that day)
Jan 00 - gym 2k - 6:34.7
Feb 00 - gym 2k - 6:28.6
Feb 00 - Crash-B - 6:29.1 (was carried over the the bin and was sick)
---------------------------------

Sept 00 - Nuneaton IRC - 6:29.9 (sick again)
Then burnt my hand and missed most the season. Did BIRC but was only 6:38.
Feb 01 - Welsh IRC - 6:33.4
Mar 01 - Cornish IRC - 6:31.9 (1st gold medal - 19-29hwt)
------------------------------------

Sept 01 - Nuneaton IRC - 6:30.8 (sick again)
Nov 01 - BIRC - 6:34.7
Feb 02 - Crash-B - 6:28.4 (this PB came from nowhere)
--------------------------------------

May 02, got pulled into a WR 100k relay attempt (Royces Gym) with 24hrs notice. We did it, but my health was a mess so I pretty much quit rowing. First race back was 18 months later, but was in a middle of organising the MAD 100k WR for Jan 04, so my training (and 2k times) was all over the shop....

Oct 03 - Portsmouth GP - 6:41.9 (really out of shape)
Dec 03 - Cardiff GP - 6:40.8
Feb 04 - Crash-B - 6:43.6 (still burnt out from the MAD 100k. only been back in training 2wks before the race. Head & heart just wasn't there)
Mar 04 - Cornish IRC - 6:28.8 (huge turning point considering Crash-B 2wks earlier. Target was to just get under 6:40 and found myself on for 6:34 with 200m to go and just sprinted for the line to almost get a PB)
------------------------------------------

Oct 04 - Cambridge GP - 6:23.6 PB
Oct 04 - Southampton GP - 6:28.4
Dec 04 - Welsh GP - 6:27.5
Dec 04 - Euro IRC - 6:27.9
Jan 05 - Glasgow GP - 6:28.1
Feb 05 - Crash-B - 6:25.4
Mar 05 - Cornish IRC - 6:24.7 (Gold and the first race I'd won in 4yrs)
-----------------------------------------------

Last season was the most races I have ever done before and each 2k was quicker than my old PB. Got Grand Prix Bronze in the Open. Each of those GP races were all about maintaining postion in the series so was always racing for position rather than times. I got the medal I wanted so was pleased

All I've learned in the last year is that doing longer rows at steady HR's just helped increase my base fitness which seemed to naturally make me quicker over 2k. I should also point out that I didn't do any race preperation for all the 2k's I did last season. The UK race calender was so jam packed, we were racing every 2wks or 3wks, so I'd just do steady rows of 60min or so at 22spm (1:58-2:02 pace) then just turn up at the race and get on with 1:36/37 pace stuff at 28-30spm.

I'm not saying this is the way to go. I just relied on prior experience to carry me thru and I needed to be consistent for the sake of GP points so didn't want to change anything.......

Hope all that made sense

I could have just given my PB and stats but then started remembering a few races over the years so thought what the heck, put that down as well. Reading 'war & peace' might have been quicker

Hi Jon that is a lot of racing.
I remember Thomas Lange watching you and says that you have quite an ability to sprint intensly without making it look hard. You have raced A LOT!
I hope all is well with you.
XENO
How is your new home?

Hey Xeno,

Didn't know Thomas said that. Cool

That list wasn't all the races I did last season. I also did a couple 1k races, a 1609m race & a 5k. There may have been others.... can't remember right now

Mind you Nigel Mayglothling who commentates at many races including BIRC, the Europeans & sometimes Boston, made a funny comment about me when I was racing at the Europeans last Dec. Just for fun I rowed the first 300m at 1:27 pace to lead the race for a bit. Nigel then said to the crowd " In the lead is Mr Jonny Goodall, but don't worry, he'll be slowing down any moment now! He can sprint for 100m and that's about it " He's a funny guy!!

The new home is good thanks! Settling in now. Been here 6wks already... doesn't time fly!!

I see that Christopher, Georgia & Xeno Jr are all clocking up the meters on the erg as well!! Great stuff!

I'm off to the gym now, although just running today. Back on the erg tomorrow

Jon
27 years old, 5'11 (1.82m), 85kg. Been indoor racing since October 2001, and have probably done about double the races of Mr Goodall . 2k race pb is 6:11.8, though have done around a second faster in the gym. This season's aim to get under 6:10.
