Little weed,

I didn't start out with a clearly defined goal per se... my intent was similar to many... getting older and realized I needed to make some positive progress on my weight, appearance and general health. Also, the activity is welcome as my work and home life just don't offer enough.

I picked rowing becuase I had done some at my health club (when I used to go) and knew I wanted to strive towards lean muscle as opposed to strictly shedding pounds. This forum helped the choice too from a support stand point... I just didn't initially realize what relaistic expextations were until I tried to come close to some of the times I had seen here.

I come here often and read. Your right about the old hands having the most insight but it would be nice to have a more realistic yardstick along the way.

Thanks for all the other newbies chiming in... for a while, I was thinking screw this, wheres the cheese cake... but I'm back on track. I'm also using a heart rate monitor... what are some of you novices trying to work at for a rate?

After reading some of the times here, I feel old, fat and week. I'm very close to breaking 8 minutes in the 2k and 1:50 in the 500 but I'm dead afterward (near vomitting) and my heart rate has hit 176. How do these folks do it???

Hi Jav1,

how we do it? I do it the same as you. My age is also 39 (two weeks to turn 40 ) heart rate is also near 180 when i do a 500 or a 1K and i am also very dead afterwards.

Maarten...

your NOT helping me here! Your times are obscene! I'd be tickeled pink if I could come within 20% of your times and not die (literally).

Congratulations as I know just how impressive it is to do what you do.

It's more dark purple
People in the gym look at me with faces like they are thinking: could i help this poor guy with a glass of water or should we call an ambulance? They surely think of an ambulance from a Mental Hospital when they see me racing a 500!

Hi! I think throwing up is related not only with food habits, algo by the pressure and getting nervious before the competition, and its also a body sistem thing. When you are making a maximun effort, your muscles secretes acid. The excess of this acid (do not know the translation of the name, in spanish is called "acido lactico") may produce the feeling of been sick. This topic, off course is a lot more wide, but my english isn´t, sorry!.

I´ve there before , In my case, it was the pressure... and the acid thing!!.
Also, a saw a lot of rowers in this situation in all my career, i guess is normal.

Cheer! and Happy new year!.
