Hi,<br><br>caught the end of an interview with John Walker on the radio last night and two of the questions asked were:<br><br>1/ HR min and max at his peak: <br><br>Answer - 36RHR - 220MHR<br><br>2/ Ratio of a aerobic to anaerobic work he did in preparation for competition: <br><br>Answer - All his training was done on the road except for the last 6 weeks when he hit the track.<br><br><br>Found this interesting.<br><br>- George

The New Zealanders were all into marathon training because of the great NZ coach, Arthur Lydiard. During their off season, all middle and long distance runners trained as marathoners. They would then move into hill training, and finally to the track. That being said, I'm sure that John Walker did more on the roads than just long slow distance. He was probably doing farleks and running over hilly terrain which builds a lot of power.

I certainly often saw him doing multiple hill reps on the upper steep slopes of One Tree Hill ..an extinct volcano in the centre of Auckland..
