You are a thinker, man. From what I have heard, you like the mind game as much as the rowing itself--and good for you! Before all is said and done, you will be tinkering so much it will make your/our heads spin! Tinkering is part of the game, at some point, perhaps, _most_ of the game. And if you tinker with things like "getting full use of the legs" and the like, the results of the tinkering can be _very_ significant. It is only tinkering with the _insignificant_ things that are a waste of time.

Tinker away!

By the way, it seems to me that the most significant things to tinker with are the things that seem almost impossibly resistant to change and therefore take enormous effort to alter. That is why, to me, things like handle position at the finish, backward lean, holes showing at the footplate, and such like are not very significant. They can be changed instantly. Things like drag, timing, sequencing, and ratio are _much_, _much_ harder to change (for the better). To change these things, you have to pay a price. _Tough_ tinkering!

Best,

ranger

That must have been a tough one for you!

I can only speak from experience. In my case sculling has taught me more about technique on an erg than anything else I have seen or read or witnessed about this subject. This includes the discussion on this Forum.

It's Rock, Paper, Scissors!

George,

Sir Pirate isn't being mean or trying to stir things up in a negative way as far as I'm concerned. It's just fun teasing. I think it's funny. I enjoy the banter, comments and different point of views. I even read all of Ranger's posts. They're like a car wreak. Don't really want to see them, but can't help looking. Hard as this may be to believe, but some comments I've made in an attempt to be humorous, could be taken in the wrong spirit. Ranger has never taken them that way.

I dont have a problem with the trash talk at all ..... it is fun. My only complaint would be that it tends to find its way into so many threads then they get side tracked from the issue.

Thats why I think that the General forum is a gr8 place for all the banter in the world and I am happy to take it and dish it up .... but I think the training forum apart from the odd side comment is not the place.

As to Ranger I like to read his posts as well and while he drives me nuts sometimes and 'invites' some 'trash' he adds a lot to the forum even if it is just to provoke thought, and doesnt deserve what I see sometimes as 'baiting'. (by the way we're not related and he doesn't need me to defend him )

The Dwayne v Graham poll was designed to promote 'friendly division' as it did on the UK forum where we know it was thrashed to death, if it needed to be started again here then ok but I would hate to see it send its tendrils thru the rest of the 'board' IMHO (actually I am not very H )

Come on John this is not like you to be a cheer leader but I to agree with Rangers comment except surely it is not tinkering if one is changing a 'fundamental' aspect of ones stroke ... (just being pedantic seeing I know Ranger likes the correct phraseology)

I would like to read a few of the accomplished people on the forum give a walk thru of their understanding and experience of their stroke ... not just the mechanics but how the stroke actually 'feels' if that is possible

- George

Apologies if I have annoyed anybody with the nature/positioning of my posts. It was only done to lighten the mood.

Life is too short to be serious all the time.

Sir Pirate

my advice to you would be what my coach has always stressed. SUSPENSION. drop your shoulders to a normal resting spot, straighten your arms until you aare supposed to pull into the body and don't put our shoulders more than 6" behind your hips when you open your back. Just hanging on the handle really helps.
As for foot plate position - I've always brought it up to the smallest position it goes at - and I am a size 14 foot. I have found that the edge of the plate being right up against the balls of your toes helps the catch power immensely.
