First Virtual Team Challenge

Post by [old] c2bill » January 30th, 2006, 10:27 am

As we come close to the end of the challenge i'd like to extend a personal congratulations to all those of you who have rowed sooo many meters over this past month! i've been reading the threads, emails and 'email newsletters' with a sense of wonder and awe. Friendships, competitions, cheers and applause all come through in the stories i've read (and of course some techical glitches...)

I'm hoping that some of you (team captains and members alike) could take the time to email me a short summary of what the challenge has meant to you - and also what we could do to make it better next year.

Thanks in advance.
-bill

billp @ concept2 . com

I'm the cpt. of the Washingtonville World Class Supersonic All Stars, a name we made up and laughed about because we expected to finish in last place and saw the name as a joke. The team comprised myself (who already had 3million+meters)and I got my wife (previous lifetime total about 70,000meters), my friend Tony, his wife, Doreen, and their 11year old daughter. Tony and I had previoulsly done the Holiday Challenges, but not the wives or daughter. We all saw this as a way of jump-starting our New Year's Resolutions for fitness and weight loss. After the first few days, we saw that we were in the top 5 or 10 teams and I kicked it into high gear to try to inspire the rest of the team to push themselves. I rowed hard for them and they rowed hard to not let their captain down! Before the challenge we made goals: Me:200,000, Tony:100,000, Doreen:50,000, and their daughter: whatever; my wife, 20,000. Well, I rowed 700,000+, Tony broke 100,000, Doreen more than doubled her goal to 200,000+, and my wife multiplied her goal by 10-fold to over 200,000. Daughter also caught the rowing bug. My wife was getting physical therapy prior to the challenge for a hip flexor problem, hence her modest goal. To her surprise she felt better rowing!! All of us supported each other, and won our division of teams with 1-5 members and now our name makes us blush. My wife and I got a new model D for Christmas and what a way to break it in! And we found a way to make the long meters fun: she'd row during the day by herself and when I got home from work, we'd set up alternating intervals of 1000m with 20second rests and take turns every 1k while watching videos or the cooking channel. And now she will continue to row, enjoying a 4 pound weight loss! Alltogether, the 4 adults lost about 40pounds!!
Thanks for the challenge. Only thing you might do differently: have teams 6-10 and 11-20 instead of 6-20.
Thanks
Hank Greenblatt

First Virtual Team Challenge

Post by [old] grams » February 6th, 2006, 12:33 pm

Us NATE members did very well. Despite illness and other life challenges we managed to get to our ergs and get some exercise most days. I enjoyed the freedom of being able to structure team goals which weren't only about meters and speed.

Thanks to C2 for the certificate graphic. I modified it a bit for our team members and posted them on our web page, available for download. Its the easiest way for me to send out high-quality graphics to folks.

Suggestion: the forum teams are proliferating. Should there be another main topic for team postings? Or are they still better off under the different headings where they are no> I assume the 'January Challenge' one will go away, so we are moving to 'General' I guess.

grams
