He stops you feeling sorry for yourself.

I think Daren has a good point about the communal feeling on the British site.

I don't think that gives us an excuse not to continue giving a big up to TA, however. I haven't really been involved that much in indoor rowing for a while but did a couple of sessions at the local gym and talked a little on the British site.

For me this is still the best thread out there, and is basically the only thread I read on the site unless Speedy has dropped some rowing wisdom somewhere else. The reason is simple; because of the folks on this thread.

Otherwise I do tend to gravitate towards the British site myself for reasons similar to the ones Daren has cited.

I don't have to remind myself to read this thread though!! And as I've now pretty much returned to 100k+ per week rowing, for the time being anyway, this is my first port of call.

Anyway, enough of that stuff. I lied about the number of metres I did this morning. I in fact did 11000 as I forgot to include a warm up 1k. First 4k was nice and slow and then I had to spoil it all by doing 2.05/500 19-21spm for 3k. The last 3k was at the same pace as the first 4.

I'm wary of overtraining. Lots of metres are ok, but too much intensity at this stage will ruin everything. Slap wrists and stand in the corner.

I don't know how I failed to remember the 1k warmup this morning as I almost fell off the seat going for a 1'20 max pull.

Now if I was in a gym ... with lots of lovelies around ... a tadpole embarrassing I think.

Happy rowing everyone
Bernard

Not sure if anyone has been reading my blog but I ran into an elderly gent in the gym who rows about 5 mins after me in the morning. We got chatting last week and he said he rowed Henley in 1948! He knocks out 2k at about 16spm/2.20 pace and still looks incredibly fit. Anyway we chatted again this AM and he told me he is 79! So I'm trying to persuede him to join TA and maybe race in one of the seniors races.

I just wish I'm in his shape at the age of 79!

Mike

Hi Chippy,

I was wondering how the 2K training program was going - good on you for holding sub 6:50 pace for so long on your last try, can't be too far off cracking it now (Enfield ?). I needed your post to get me firing again after a month of just mooching around at the gym living off recent PB glories but doing stuff all on the rower.

So set the thing to 2K today and managed a 6:51.8 DF 111 and SPM 31 and felt pretty good (until 20 mins afterwards when the euphoria wore off and everyone else in the gym tired off hearing about it !). First 500m was right on the money 1:42.5 and I then let it slide out to 1:44s for the next 1000m which left me feeling strong enough to come home reasonably strong and more importantly, in control. Maybe try this pacing next time Rob and with your power the last 500m should see the 6:50 go down. Secret seems to be doing the middle 1000m at about 95% and not on the edge (which makes the last 500m seem insurmountable).

Thanks for providing the motivation my friend,

Martin

Hi Niall, Bernie and Daren,

Thanks for the posts to reinvigorate the forum and stimulate some friendly intra-Taff rivalry. Just what is needed now the balmy Summer days are drawing to a close and the mind turns to matters erging. Some possible challenges -

Carla, I'll definately be in the 100K challenge now that I realise that it's not a 24 hour timeframe (always takes me a while to realise that in the US it's MMDD not DDMM for dates - wonder how the different convention came about ?) Maybe now Lynsey is back in action and pretty close to you in total metres the 2 of you could have a bit of rivalry on the metres board ?

Debra, Daren - first to 1 Million.

Niall, Mike W - first to 7:05 then the big 7 O.

Byron, Mike W - first to 2 Million

Phil to go sub 6:30

And so on. We can register our Goals and Challenges and TaffWeb will reveal all as the season unfolds .

What about you OzTaff I hear you say - Well I've got mine with the Chippy sub 6:50 gauntlet and to PB in all 10 categories this season.

Great 6:33 Phil, hope to see some video of you in action sometime.

Cheers,

Martin

Hi all

Just managed to achieve in a week what it took Carole McNally to do in a day. And I thought my first week back on the erg went ok!

I think it puts Ms McNally's achievement into perspective and makes me aware of how much more there is for me to achieve on the erg in the coming months.

By the end of the day I will have rowed 110,000 metres in my first week, yet I'm not quite satisfied.

I think that's because all of the rows have been merely 'get back into it rows' and I haven't been training as such. However, I still need another week of 'soft' rowing, before ramping up the pace, but keeping the distance. I see my normal training pace when I lose my discipline.

My goals for the coming week will be to row 20,000 metres a day. That makes 140,000 for the week. Again the important thing is not pace.

As long as I remember that I'm not testing every time I sit on my machine then this goal should not be too difficult to achieve given this week's tally.

I must admit the morning row has been a little daunting if I think about it too much it, but once I've rowed 1500 metres I find it hard to stop. The evening row has been pleasant.

I'll also add one session of 4x500m next week, so my body and brain don't become too habituated to continual long rows.

I'll be trying to go under 1'20" on my low pull as well, though it may not happen quite yet.

I have a way to go to get back to 7'08 shape for the 2000 metres which is where I was at this stage last year.

My sleep patterns seem to have returned to normal. In fact I'm finding it difficult to stay in bed once I'm awake.

One thing I've learned is that achieving short term goals can be easier, and everything more concrete, than long term goals. Life and other priorities can interfere with the best thought out and well-motivated programmes. As Rabbie Burns would say:

The best laid plans o mice and men gang aft aglay

But not always!

regs
Bernard

So I'm more likely to read/post on the UK site, which in turn means I have specifically remember to come here to read this one.

I also really hate the way that IPB shows everyone who's reading what. =)

Hey Daren,
I have subscribed to just a few of the threads on this forum, so that I don't spend too much time on it, but don't miss what I really care about. I used to find myself reading lots of stuff that really didn't matter to me and just wasting time reading people's arguments. Now I really just look at the TAff thread when I get an email that there's activity and of course post if I need motivation or have any to offer. And then if I have some free time and feel like browsing, I'll go on. Why don't you just subscribe to the Taff thread and then you won't miss anything but not have to bother otherwise. We miss your posts--it's so much more fun when everyone is putting their 2 cents in, goading each other on, etc., and really helps with the team feeling! You can also set it up so that you can read anonymously (sp) if you want to.

Carla

Sounds like a great idea!
Well you are doing much more than that already; this is really only motivational for folks like me that are just getting back in the swing. But if all us malingerers get on with it, the Taffs will rise in the standings again!
By the end of the day I will have rowed 110,000 metres in my first week, yet I'm not quite satisfied. dry.gif
Are you coming back from total inactivity? That's a pretty high weekly total, if so! I am coming back from pretty much switching to biking, and less of it than I had been rowing, and my plan is only about 50K a week. I'm doing most if it in the form of pokey 10Ks and not even worrying about whether I keep going the whole time or not and paying no attention at all to pace. I don't intend to work on pace at all for at least several weeks. I'm just working on my stroke and trying to get equal force out of both legs (my right leg is a lazy bum) and also on getting the hands out fast, then bending at the hips, not waist, doing 10MPS, and making sure my stomach muscles are good and tight at the catch.

CarlaCarla, I'll definately be in the 100K challenge now that I realise that it's not a 24 hour timeframe (always takes me a while to realise that in the US it's MMDD not DDMM for dates - wonder how the different convention came about ?) biggrin.gif Maybe now Lynsey is back in action and pretty close to you in total metres the 2 of you could have a bit of rivalry on the metres board

Bernard,

You're doing exactly the right thing by taking things easy (if 110,000m can be called "easy" ). Your body will certainly be thankful in the long run and you'll find your return to form will be quicker.

Martin,

Stop teasing Chippy with 6:51s. Get down to business and get the sub-6:50 behind you so you can move on to the next PB challenge (1000m or 1609m?).

Chippy,

Hope you're not taking this from our Wonder Down Under. Get on the erg and bash out that sub-6:50 time while it's still night time in Oz!

(See, I'm so fickle, I could be a woman!!).

Mike W,

How's that 2K training going? I'm hoping to go sub 7:08 at Enfield on September 25th so hope you're keeping coming along well. martin's quite rightly paired us off for a challenge and I look forward to hearing your progress.

Bernie,
I'll agree with what Niall said about taking it easy. However...don't be afraid to punch it every once in a while. As long as your not diving in to deep, it won't hurt you to push things a bit.

Speedy

The Question of the Day on my company's Intranet posed the question:

Q: What do you fear if you suffer from ergophobia?

The options were:

1) Eggs
2) Open spaces
3) Flying
4) Work

No mention of rowing at all.

The answer was Work. So it just goes to show, if you fear work, stay away from the erg!!!

Forgot to mention yesterdaythat I went through the 5 Million Metre mark for all-time metres this week. Already sent my email off for my long-sleeved t-shirt (nice bonus)

Of course this pales into significance when lined up against others (especially Mr Speedy!) but 5 Million Metres is 5 Million Metres!

In a warped way, I'm looking forward to the next 5 Million

I've gone backwards since last year and haven't got any times for this season as I've been following a training plan rather than doing set distances. As for suggestions - it'd be good to see some challenges up there for the team ... and that would probably get people going in and using the website.
