Nice effort but intervals for the first session in weeks. Seems a bit of a risk, very good chance of getting injured.
Good solid mileage is best in my view if you are not training for anything too specific.

[/quote]

I'm just restarting and that's what I'm working on now. Some easy 30-40 minute runs which will increase slowly. After about a month I'll start throwing in some speed work. I haven't rowed for several days due to a sore back. This has given me some extra time to get some running in. In a few minutes here I'll give the erg a go, but no speedy stuff there too till I'm sure my back can handle it. I'm going to get biking on the wind trainer too. So many things to do, eh?Good solid mileage is best in my view if you are not training for anything too specific.
Still not doing that much running, but I'm getting away from the long runs and doing some more specific workouts under supervision of our (super)coach Mayo. First coached running-workouts since 1987!!

Today: smooth warmup, some gymnastics, then: 2*10 100m sprints. Great fun, let's see how I feel tomorrow!

Have had a small chat with Mayo.
Surprisingly, and contrary to what one uses to believe about oneself, he has teached me that after seeing me run, I should doing best at the SHORT distances, this is: 400m!
Don't know if I will be giving it a try..., but I'm very curious how I could do
I think 400m and specially 800m must have some similiarities to 2k rowing.
Anyone of you has experience in these distances?
Feel that's just a little bit too late to start my carreer as a sprinter

I think the sprints will benefit your rowing a lot.

I only timed 800m once in college, and I was not in that great of shape, I thought. A 2:25 in January after 3 weeks off due to a sprained ankle.

We ran a lot of stairs (including 2 and 3 steps per stride), with sprints on the flat between aisles. I also did 100yd and 220 yd striding sprints, not required for rowing. I just had speed, and enjoyed the sprint workouts to maintain it. I think the combination gave me great leg speed and leg drive for rowing.

I hope to get into good running condition again, as weather improves, and my rehab gets cooking.

Do watch those sprint intervals when older. I suffered 5 small calf tears, either leg, across one year in my mid 40's.
-----------------------
On that strained low back, if you want to try rowing with it, try opening your hip angle as you approach the catch, last 1/4 of the slide, so your back is tall and straight, and shoulders just behind your hips. Maintain that angle through the drive.

According to Bill Pearl's Getting Stronger book, that strain will take 5-7 days to really be good again. A doctor friend believes running is very good for the low back as a rhythmic massage. Of course you need to run or jog at a speed that feels good.

If you use heat on it, keep it mild.

Did you get wet feet?
Blisters? Toe nails?
What shoes did you wear?

The snow was not deep, only between 1 and 3 or 4 inches but very slippy at times, especially on some of the descents on stones. No blisters or anything and after you have been running for 4.5 hours everything is wet with sweat anyway, which is a good reason not to stop as you get cold very very quickly.

Still have a black toe-nail from a fell-race 3 weeks ago where I stubbed it. I think it might drop off eventually.

I wore 2 thermals and a gore-tex top, hat, gloves and a buff round my neck, trackie bottoms with a pair of cycling shorts over. The sun did get stronger around 11:00 so it was definitely warmer for the last 1.5 hours although the wind-chill factor must have been quite high.

My quads are very stiff and a bit of problem going downstairs. however I did have a good rowing session yesterday of 12.5K 16' at 22spm and 5k at 18spm after a 16' warm-up.

The plan is 12K @ 18 tonight. Easy run tomorrow, row in the evening, 10 mile road run on Weds and if I am OK for that do a 20 mile road race on Sunday. Steady pace, time is not of interest to me at the moment, just need the miles.

Not spectaculiar but my 100 was 11.5 and 400 was 52.9

Those 2 x 2 x 100 are great. Those built enough power. LOng distance running does is my oppionen only harm you rowing. Only lightweights can get away with it. To run well to have to be light and for rowing being a bit more musculair and thus heavier is better.

Ps doing a 400 m dash fullspeed is a real killer. no joke
