Just curious as to how many of you actually row on the water. I'm aware its an indoor rowing forum, but i'm sure there are some of you out there.

If you do, what form of boat do you row in? single scull? pair? four? eight? And do any of you compete in any regattas in Melbourne, Australia? Cheers.

Last tiime I saw any data on this is, it was about a 50/50 split at indoor regattas. As for me I row on the water, I am not particularly fond of the single, will do it when I have no other options, but prefer the bigger boats, both sweep and scull. The pair seems the most difficult to make work properly, and the 8's and quads are a blast. dennis

Im a water rower too, but unfortunately not in the sunny climate of Australia. Have rowed and raced in 8's, coxed and coxless 4's, and double sculls. Also like rowing pairs because you can really feel the difference that you are making to the boat and it really helps your sweep technique. Quads are great too. Only problem with the pair is that I am a terrible steersman

I think Dennis is right, there is about a 50/50 split on here. There would be a smaller proportion on the UK forum think, although some have taken it up after enjoying the erg so much.

Awesome!

I have actually had very little experience in the single scull.. I've raced once in my life in a pair, and have done a few races in a coxed four.

My main passion is the eight, currently with rowing season in full swing i'm at a regatta every weekend! its ace. I row in schoolboy division by the way.. Does anyone belong to any racing clubs in Melbourne? Cheers.

Hi, I'm rowing OTW since I was 9, but didn't touch an oar from 1987-2005.
I have raced all categories (1x, 2-, 2+, 2x, 4-, 4+, 4x and 8+), but my best results have been in 4- and 8+.
Actually I am rowing for the CEU-Barcelona master team, but also racing some open regattas.
Last year we made gold for Spanish master championship in 8+ and silver in 4-, but actually I'm enjoying most the coxless pairs wit Polaco.
Next saturday we will be racing in the open category in Castelldefels, let's see how it goes!
Last year we gave it a try on open sea regattas with a 4x+, it was great!
I also had the opportunity to try a surf boat: WOAH!!!
In my early years, I used to HATE the erg. Now I think it's a perfect tool for physical workouts, but also to learn how to plan your OTW regattas and workouts (ever tried a WP Level 4 OTW?)

I have just moved from Ireland to England for work and so had to move clubs as well. If my new club needs a sub though I will be more than happy to sit in. The Thames Tideway is a long way though.......
from Kiesling's The Shell Game:

QUOTE

The ergometer simulates the physical demands of rowing, packaging the pains with none of the amenities that make it worthwhile ...

Perhaps that overstates the case. I do the ergometer and on-the-water. Xeno’s DVD’s and training plans, virtual clubs, incentives from Concept 2, etc. make the ergometer enjoyable but there is nothing else like an early morning row on flat water and those rare moments when everything feels perfect.

Byron
There's nothing like a great moving 8+, but it's tough to get a good group together, so I'm focused on the 2x at the moment. The most fun is rowing the 2x with my wife, it also brings a whole new meaning to post training debriefings.

We plan on being in Sydney for the 2009 World Masters Games, only 1340 training days to go.

Rowed 8+, 4+, 4x, 2x, 1x, and Raced 8+, 4x, 2x
Coxed 8+, 4+ (though I'm 50lbs too heavy for coxing, I've coxed both of these to master's wins!)
Coached 8+, 1x (for Novices )

Rowed for two years at Des Moines in Master's categories, and have always coxed a boat to gold but only rowed to silver

Started 3 years ago, and am now Vice-President of our club and co-captain of a fitness/recreational program. Amazing how these things draw you in eh?

Cheers, Paul

Are you looking for a training partner nearby?

I've never been south of the equator. Although Australia is definitely somewhere I would like to go. The flight seems outrageously long. I think if I were to go - I would not come back.

I row on the water. Year round, health permitting. I find jumping into a team boat to be generally thrilling - but I am a single sculler. I have not raced well in my single lately as my health interferes with training.

Although I have not been on the water for some time, I would say I am a water rower with an erg problem. I rowed 8s and 4s and Pairs in Canada mostly but have competed in the US and Britain also. I am looking for a new club now after some time away from the water. The erg used to be the worst part about rowing particularly that orange jessing death machine! Now I am quite happy to tick away the meteres in my basement waiting to get back in a boat.

"The erg is simply a device to build walls after you break them and make you suffer on your path to glory"

Been an on water rower since 1999 when i started in hs. Never erged much till college. They teach you to have such a bittersweet love affair with this machine.

I've rowed lightweight each year. Specficly the 8, but spent a couple months in a four. I love the speed you feel in an eight, but the four has an incredible flow cause its a little slower, but when theres only four guys cranking their guts out on it, it creates this divine feeling.
