The start is a jump start and you land with one foot next to the foot straps and then land on the seat, you have to know where the seat is! When going out, over a wave, we have to leave the seat (especially the bow pair) to "find" the water with our blade. This is repeated often, again when you come down the sliding seat could be "anywhere"!

However surfboats are fit for sliding seats for certain open water marathons, where negotiating the surf break is not a factor!

Cheers
Gary

I would be more the NO SURF break negotiator type of rower
XENO
Maybe the seats should be on rails and have a pin in them for the start. Once you are out of the breakers, everyone could pull the pin holding the seat stationary. In that way, you will get more power into the oars.

Cheers,

Paul Flack

Those are really incredible rowing action pictures!

And then there are a few "daring" rowers for those of us who may never get the opportunity to row on water:
rowing service.com/office 4

For some reason I found this funny...thought I'd share.

I think when Gary says "there are no sliding seats in the boat", it is not the same as saying that there is not a lot of seat sliding going on.

However the great majority of races especially in Aus have plenty of swells, chop and runners. Then you'd have to secure the seats again coming back into the wave area.
Overall, not practiacal, and unnecesary as the wet seats are just as easy to slide on as sliding seats in a regular "sprint" race! The leg drive in surfboat rowing is just as significant as in skinny boat and C2!

Cheers
Gary

Surfboat rowing is part of the Surf Life Saving Association competition, so safety is an important factor. It is a tough sport and most rowers will take a few bumps and bruises, but they'll all tell you its worth it!
We are always looking for new rowers here in the US, the sport has slowly started to take off in Portugal, France, Netherlands, Surf Clubs in GB are starting to get back into it and the Kiwis have competed for years!

Cheers
GW

And don't forget, the erg gym may be full of gym rats, but the surf in OZ tends to contain sharks....

These surf rower videos are unblievable. Maybe we should try this with our "Empachers".

Especially for those of you going to Boston soon...

I saw a wonderful gallery of images titled: "Rowing on the Charles" with lovely morning & evening photos of (surprise) rowing on the Charles. I got in touch with the photographer and got permission to post a couple of them here:

©2004, Joseph Provenzano

©2004, Joseph Provenzano

but I encourage you to go to "the photographer's gallery here"and see all of them...they're really something!

When you get to the gallery, be sure to click on the thumbnails so that you can get the full impact of the images in a larger size. Below the first one you open, select the image size that's best for your monitor. Once you've ID'd the best size for your viewing, you can then move from image to image with the "previous/next" links at the upper & lower right of each image in the gallery, and you'll be presented with the comparable size from each subsequent image.

While the two examples are of singles, not all of the images are...

Enjoy!

Alissa

Great link, thanks!

Here is another GREAT picture of myself (papa Nacho) and my name-and-rowingmate Nacho Hidalgo (crazyrowing) during a race that took place in Castelldefels last saturday. Please note the crabs at the bottom of the picture; there are lots of crabs (animals, of course!) in Castelldefels.

Author: my son Robin (6)
