... to be part of a world wide rowing community.

I just wanted to make a few comments about this forum, the ranking system, and C2 in general.

The current atmosphere here is horrible. Instead of talking of training and races, most of the posts are throwing nasty insults at each other.

I am a decent rower but I will never be a world record holder or a national champion. In the limited number of races in my area (there is only one), I will be an "also rowed". The Concept 2 ranking system provides me with outlet to my competitive side. Otherwise, rowing would just be a workout. And it's cool to compare myself to what others are doing. Sometimes I read someone's profile and think, "no way", but I do not come to this forum and ask everyone if that person is fake. Nobody would defend my actions challenging someone in 105th place on this forum.

We are very fortunate that C2 provides this forum and the online rankings. I would guess that much of the effort C2 puts into promoting indoor rowing stems from a passion for rowing, not just financial gain.

I would like to say thank you to C2 for making rowing a passion and not just a workout.

I couldn't agree more - thank you C2! Excellent products (sculls, oarlocks, ergs, dyno), superb support, and helpful resources to help people keep engaged in rowing, sculling and erging. Like many, I've been a fan since the early 1980s and appreciate all you do for the sport.

Thanks to Concept and Nonathlon for providing enough variety so that no matter what age or size or sex one is, or waht the individual goal may be, each participant can find his/her niche and be proud of their accomplishments.

The forum has an 'ignore poster' feature which works well for persistent inflammatory participants seeking attention. I recommend it.

grams, the ancient marathoner

I'm another slow rower who would never win any races. I just ignore certain threads. Some seem like they'd be really helpful to serious rowers, but they barely make sense to me. I tend to hang out in the less technical forums, but the neat thing is, when you DO have a technical question, there's always someone who can provide helpful suggestions or advice. The forums are generally very friendly and supportive, so don't feel afraid to jump in.

Emilia
Member of Ducks In A Row and the Fowl Play January Virtual Team

For lighter relief, you may want to take a look at the C2 UK Forum

And as proof of it's attitude, I would point you towards a post from a rower in New Zealand:

http://www.concept2.co.uk/forum/viewtop ... =15

(While I'm not saying abandon the US Forum, it might just give you a fresher experience sharing views on the UK Forum - as the saying goes, "a change is as good as a rest")

Thanks for the invite.

I think this forum is lost to the monster. I am the only one in this thread while the monster draws a big crowd.

Off to erg. I am planning a timed trial today. Maybe when I get back the monster will decide I there shouldn't be rankings for people like me.

The rankings are exactly for people like you, the relatively anonymous masses that are struggling to make progress at their own level. I've kept track of the percentiles over the years and even if the top few times bobble around, the percentiles are quite consistent, and getting past the 75th is really quite good, the 90th and you should probably start seeking out a way to get in a boat, there are clubs that would love you. Seriously, measuring success by targeting yourself against an unknown individual is really kind of crazy, unless you have some particular genetic gifts that put you on the freakish side of potential, those top spots ain't gonna happen, no sense in worrying about it any more than having an alien invasion from Mars. Though the mars thing is more likely to happen.

Cheers.

And the other thread is a monster only if you choose to view it that way.

Of COURSE big drama draws a big crowd. But if you've witnessed other internet dust-ups, you know that they eventually burn themselves out or get locked down by a moderator, and things settle back into a more productive—if slightly duller—groove.

I agree that allowing "the rest of us" to rank our times is a great feature of this site. Thanks, C2!

It's possible to retain it fairly well, or every University and Club would be throwing out the Ergs pretty quick. Perhaps they are just jealous, and that is their version of "Ergs Don't Float" because they aren't able to get similar times.

If you have the engine, we can teach you to row, but if there is no engine, no technique is going to move the boat fast. Tough to teach "be strong".

Cheers.
