Good rowing, hosers.
We are just flying through Manitoba.

This a picture of the grain elevator in Brandon, otherwise known as the "the wheat city". I hope to start putting a few kliks on the erg soon, although Linda tells me I should figure out how to walk first.

Keep those kilometers coming, eh!

Jim

Well everyone, you are cruising right along. Just thought I'd pop in and say Hi. My fractured arm is healing just fine, I should be able to pick up a golf ball in about a week.

I'm just kidding, but not really... I'm getting a little mobility, but they mean it when they say it will take 2 weeks before you can even start to THINK about recovery. This is my first fracture, and a wave of compassion has washed over me for all those people I have seen walking around with casts on. I have no cast so hopefully I'll be back on the erg to help you out of Ontario and toward the home (for most of you 'away') stretch... Oh... it even hurts to TYPE the word 'stretch'....

I'm feeling better this morning, so we'll see how tonight's session goes.

I hope all you hoseheads have your toques on as we head through Manitoba. I'm not sure about the rest of the province, but we had about 10" of wet, heavy snow yesterday.

I hope to post a picture or two of our area later on (if I ever get this image hosting figured out!).
Can you give me some details? Time, camera/lens, exposure, post-capture manipulation? Do you mind if I use it as wallpaper?

I used to be in a part of the world that would have occasional mornings that felt like that, but not now...

Thanks!

Alissa

Holly, I am glad you like the google earth map of the row. I was wondering if anyone actually looked at it. It is fun to make.

Mark, how long did your back take to improve? Did you do anything special to facilitate the healing?

Keep on rowin' hosers. We are making good progress. I am going to try and pull a few meters today, but it will be an arms only venture at best, eh

Jim

Just to let you know Jim, we've been having a great time with Google-Earth! Not only have we been checking out the daily views on our journey but it's been a great geography lesson. My daughter loves checking out Manhatten, but she says that "how could people actually live there?" and, "where are the trees?
It will be good to hear what Mark did for his back, I was bumming big time when I had troubles and I wondered how long I'd be layed up. I tried message, but that didn't seem to help much, but I think stretching made a big difference. A relative of mine had almost chronic back pain and a trainer at his Univ. recommended this one and I've had good results from it. Laying on your stomach, keep your hips on the floor but slowly raise your trunk, using your arms, till you feel a stretch in your stomach. Another one is in a knealing position (hands on floor) do the "cat" motion and then the opposite position (similar to the last stretch.) Lastly, when I went in for the message I told the person I was rowing and she said that a good stretch for the lats. is the one where you reach over your shoulder with one hand and up your back with the other and try to touch hands. I couldn't do that on one side so she recommended holding a towel between the hands. I try to do these after each row (except when lazy ) and it's helped keep the back gremlins away.

Welcome CalgaryHolly, and all you other Hosers and Honorary Hosers that have joined the team since I did! I'm the gimp with the broken arm.

Just today I was talking to a friend who was sitting in an idling car when the rad fan turned on. I thought it was an erg and I started to drool...

QUOTE(jetwbt @ Nov 9 2005, 03:04 AM)

Rick,

Is it worth trying opening the vents all the way and rowing one-handed?

Brian

I thought of that Brian, but right now my problem isn't so much thinking of alternate ways of training, it is the intense fatigue that comes with this type of injury... I've had all sorts of soft tissue injuries, but pain is the only thing that slowed me down. Now, the pain is only there if I move the wrong way or (God help me) bang my elbow against the doorframe, but the raw fatigue during this last week has been... entirely unexpected.

I'm only on day 10 (feels like it's been 3 months), but I am determined to go in and just start rowing with both hands on the lowest setting, very slowly and gingerly, on day 20.

So, hosers, another week and a half and I will be shooting you a half kilometer here and there !!

Rick, when I got busted up some years ago, I remember that beer tasted especially good during that time . (self prescribed medicine) Rest up and get healed. I rowed 6.5 k today. John.
