There shouldn't be any feathering going on, so any 'hard skin' developement should be minimal.

At any rate, you can use cycling gloves, or weight lifting gloves (both are pretty similar) if need be.

Any one else have any other suggestions?

Dwayne

I got loads of blisters when I started erging and recently again as I have got a new handle, its something that is just best ignored and in the end you will find your hands get used to it. It does have an added benefit that when your bored at work you can take a sharp scalpel to the callouses and chop them off .

I've developed callouses finally, but when my "problem areas" on my hands start hurting, I place a cold, damp washrag on the handle and continue erg-ing. It seems to help me anyway

It should just be cradled in your fingers, no need to grip it. This is my first season rowing on the water and I have developed some callouses, but that is from feathering. and they are minor compared to what you describe.

And my wife, who only ergs, has no callouses at all. I checked.

Aaron

Your fingers should be like a hook over the handle. No need to grab tight -- the erg won't get away from you.

But once you have blisters and callouses, it seems like they breed more blisters and callouses. I have them from rowing on the water. (They tell me I am holding on too tight.) And I keep getting more blisters underneath the callouses. I drain the blisters with a needle and file down the callouses with a abrasive stone while in the shower and the callouses are relatively soft. I got the stone at the drug store for just that purpose.

bw

I also developed callouses even though I was only lightly hooking my fingers around the handle. I tried cycling mits but my hands got too hot. I then tried the hand pads from the UK site and they were ok but I still found them a bit uncomfortable. Finally I solved it by wrapping cycle handlebar tape around the handle. No more problems.

I've wrapped the handle with white nylon socks, which protects my fingers and gives me an excellent feel for the handle.

A fingernail clipper or an emory board works well to smooth callouses.

http://concept2.ipbhost.com/index.php?a ... try8897

Im cured! well kind of, I went to the site mentioned by Citroen -

http://www.concept2.co.uk/shop/hand_pads.php

and bought the Grip Master Hand Pads from the site (was bored at work and playing on the computer buying stuff as you do ). I previously tried using my weight lifting gloves which were ...well.. rubbish they didnt protect my hands and after an hour of sweating the black lether dyed my hands like a lump of coal which looked great

Anyways... the gripmaster gloves protect my hands v great and ive actually started growing skin back on them now which is a bonus. I highly recommend them for anyone witht he same sore hand problems - they even fit my shovel like hands aswell

In addition (and again bored at work) I bought the Deluxe Seat Pad from the same website to protect my boney bum which helps too - From now on I'm not going to moan about any part of my body hurting while rowing now- I'm a happy bunny

p.s. Im not being paid to promote the online shop if anyone was thinking that!
