I'll go first then. Graduated from Forest Park High School, going to Virginia Tech to study Aerospace or Ocean engineering. Looking to row but at the moment that might be pushed back because ROTC will take up a huge chunk of time (ROTC is Marine Corps btw). Ship out the 13th of August to begin h*** week and then classes begin on the 25th. Yeeeeeeeeee-haaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwww.

Your ROTC is NAVAL not Marine - Naval includes Navy and Marine Corps.
You might want to get a leg up on your gouge since both the unit CO (submarines) and XO (Naval Flight Officer) are both in the Navy.

VPI is a great school and the unit there is certainly growing a solid reputation. Do good work, listen and learn, and earn that commission.

A former NROTC Unit XO.

xcountryrower,

Good luck with NROTC! (Yes, even though you applied for the MC scholarship, you're a mid like everyone else ROTC may take up giant chunks of your time (it certainly did with me), but crew is definitely compatible with it, at least at Cornell. There were four rowers in my class (of 22) alone, and there's at least one in every other ROTC class I saw.

I recommend letting all the ROTC people know upfront that you intend to row and what effect that may have on your training. For instance, at my unit, members of a varsity team did not have to do otherwise-mandatory freshman drill. You'll also probably not get as involved in ROTC extra-curriculars as some of your classmates. And if you have any conflicts, let everyone know of them as soon as you know. Let the crew team know of your ROTC obligations as well. Everyone I knew was rowing because they loved it, but their first priorities were staying in school and getting that commission. Crew would (and did) drop by the wayside when it became too much to handle.

And, as I'm class of '05, I'll respond to that post too...going to flight school, baby! But currently stashed in Connecticut learning all about submarines, enjoying the beach, and hanging out with the family. Ah, the life of an ensign

-Liz
