this is kind of wierd, but i was wondering why grunting helps people. Let it be a hard workout trying to get those last few seconds off, the end of a race trying to push it past the line, or weight lifting trying to get that bar up. Is there any science behind this. Thanx for any responses.

I think it's just that, when applying maximum effort (on a pull, push etc.), people tense their core (chest, abdomen) and hold their breath. The breath gets held against an exhale. (Try it, it's very difficult to 'tense' against an inhale.) The "grunt" comes with the subsequent release of the held breath, which is under pressure so comes out with a rush and a 'grunt'.

That's my theory, anyway.
