I do everything, port, star, sculling, coxing(when people want to put up with it)
I probly do slightly better technically on star than port, altho I've been stuck on port for the while due to an injury.
All said tho, I'm a better sculler than sweeper. I always end up sweeping like a sculler much to some of the other girls' annoyance sometimes.
My preference is definitely sculling, hard to beat a good row in a single.

Heather Johnson
F20 158lbs 5'7"
2k 7:32.2 20min 5057 30min 7481

Port - I have a hip problem that means I don't have the mobility required in my right leg to row starboard. I did try recently after two years of port, and couldn't work it out at all!

Cheers, Paul

Hey Heather,

Me too, I've sculled longer so my sculling tenique is better... but in college they only have sweep at most colleges. If I want to row in college the I figure I'll have to become a sweep rower.

I've also been asked to cox... but only when they're desperate, I know what to do but I'm not exactly ideal coxing size... 5'8" and not tiny either... but I agree that it is so much more fun sculling. I personally love the quad.

~Sara~

I row #7, but no idea if that is port or starboard, as we have stroke side and bow side over here.

I guess I could look in up on the interweb, but I'm sure someone here will tell me if I ask nicely

Some crews even count the Stroke seat as #1 instead of #8, does that make the "stroke" the "bow"?

RE the "bowside/strokeside", look the German terms for the sides, "stuerboard" and "backboard" (spelling is wrong, I know) - both sound like starboard side considering the American and UK terms. Ha!

I'm just glad I was tought how to scull before being tought how to sweep. it made such a difference. I have no problem switching sides now.

I always row on right side..

Once I tried to switch side and it almost ended "fataly"
I think its very very hard to switch side once u get used to one. Everything is opposite. The feathering hand, you have to bend your upper body to the other side,....

OK so there's mostly port sweepers... why?

Could it be because most people are righthanded? So the right arm is stronger and it's outside so you pull more with the right hand and feather with the left? Just an idea anyone have any other ideas.

Also Lefty's what do u row? Mostly Starbord? righty's mostly port??? OK again it's just an idea
I find it strange that there are more switchers than starbord rowers... ?? weird.

~Sara~
