Hey Doug, I think it was Los Gatos that beat us at Lake Meritt earlier this year. We needed to beat them by ONE SECOND. At the finish line I looked over and noticed that I was even with the six man. Since I row six I knew we had lost. I hate those close finishes, that is I hate them when our side loses! I used to row for Cal back in the late sixties. I think there is someone at Los Gatos who is my contemporary. I"m terrible with names, but it sure is fun to see someone from back then still rowing! Good Luck with your injury and with jury duty. Franko

Hey Franko,

In that race it was Natoma that edged you. And you edged us. I did win one MD4, so it was a good day. Remember the horrendous conditions? Pete Taylor, Bob Conn, John Hawley, Terry Duryea. Remember any of them? All Cal. This lone Washington Huskie found it quite satisfying to fly past all of their erg scores!

Doug

I don't know much about dragon boat racing but from what I know it seems like fun... but the great thing about rowing is how it's so much better for joints than running... I'd love to run but it bothers my hip and I'm 15 now I don't want to have a bad hip at 25 so I stick with rowing.

~sara

"Life's short... row hard"
"Real athletes row, the rest just play games"
"Shut up and row"

hey Doug, The only one that looks familiar is John Hawley. When you see him tell him hello from me. Frank Graetch class of 72, With Marty McNair as coach. Too bad it wasn't Steve Gladstone. A close family friend has a son and daughter rowing for the Huskies. My 16 year old daughter rows for Berkeley High. I row for Marin. Needless to say there is some confusion for whom to cheer. Nowadays I generally cheer for the individual unless it happens to be Cal against Washington. Then the real feelings come out! GO BEARS!
That race at Lake Merrit: We were at the starting line in mixed fours when the wind started. Our boat got blown around quite a bit. At one time we were perpendicular to the racecourse with the bow man(actually woman) sculling like mad. It took her forever to get straight. She probably exhausted herself; we did not do very well in that race. My next race is the goldrush, maybe you'll be healthy by then. Take it easy, Franko
