Hello all. I was just curious as to how many ergers vs water vs 'bi-rowers' we have here on the forum.

Dwayne, For me the erg has always been a tool, and a part of the preparation for the challenges of the on water stuff. I'm still trying to get the water stuff in line with the erg, that transfer is difficult. Not that the erg isn't challenging enough in and of itself, but I think I got put together for mindless repetitive excercise. We got a couple of inches of snow last night , I don't suppose Phoenix....no never mind. dennis

I rowed on the water once with a friend. Someday, I hope to buy my own boat and join a boat club to row in team boats. Next year, I hope our family will attend a one week rowing camp near the Concept factory.

Cheers,

Paul Flack

I started erging in March 2004 after my step-son started a crew program at 14 (he is now pulling under 6:50 in the 2K, I'll never catch him.) Anyway, after 6 months and geez, a 100,000 or so pulls of the chain, and dropping 35 pounds, my wife and I are going to enjoy the privacy of Charlotte Hollings and John Dunn's B&B/sculling camp in a couple weeks. I'm going to try really hard not to break the record for most swims over a weekend (8 over 8 sessions, for those who must know). It should be very humorous and even more humbling and I am sure I will learn a ton. I'll report back for the enjoyment of all.

Peter

Hi everyone I am new here, and relatively new to rowing as well. I have been erging with my friends who row for the local club for close to 6 months and recently joined the local club, Los Gatos Rowing Club. Really enjoy both on and off water. I'll look for a place to post an introduction

I started taking an on-the-water class this summer and had to drop out due to a tendon injury I got from cycling. I wasn't worried about hurting it during the actual rowing, but handling the 8-person shell was problematic. I learned a whole new meaning for 'gimme 10' with the shell. My teammates were mostly over age 40 ladies, some with questionable upper body strength, and it was harder than the actual rowing.

I will get out on the lake again next year, somehow. After I recover from a pulled calf muscle I got 2 weeks ago while square-dancing with a group of young Polish guys.

Grams

I used to row (on water) long ago (57-62), but went to a college that didn't have a crew, and then have lived where its just too far to the nearest boathouse (I'm still an associate member of my old boat club!). I've wanted to get an erg ever since the first model A came out, but never could put enough nickels together until just a couple of weeks ago. I'm real glad to be "rowing" again, even if it is "just" on an erg. Hope someday to get back on the water, but I'm sure the erg will always be part of my exercise life.

I used to row in college. That was 35 years ago! I guess I'm one of those baby boomers going back to their roots. I now row for a highly competative master program out here on the west coast. We erg every morning before getting on the water. Every two weeks we do a 20 min. test that determines our club ranking. I have an ancient erg at home, but find rowing alone too hard/boring to do consistentely. Lately my times have leveled out at approx 5400 meters/ 20 minutes. I'm trying to figure out how best to increase the distance, that is lower my splits. The best part of rowing here in the Bay Area is that one can be on the water all year round! Cheers

Hey Mark J,

I wish our club would find a place to post introductions! Welcome to LGRC. Are you in any of the sweep programs? Jen's recreational rowing? Hope to meet you sometime.

Hey Franko,

Which club are you in? Marin? Just my guess as you say "Very competitive" in the Bay area. Do you really rank members that often, and openly? Just curious, as many of our member, esp. those who didn't row in college, get a bit skittish with the whole "ranking thing".

Hey Dwayne,

Have you been on the water with anyone?? With your power, you'd be both worshipped and unequivocally welcomed, but also perhaps more than a little resented for the big shadow you'd cast. Erging is one thing. Rowing adds quite a bit. Talk about working with a crew, and its really a different world. Now you're dealing with people.

Best Rgds,
Doug

I answered ERG ONLY because my two recreational shells have been sitting on saw horses for 2 years straight. I'm slack!

I also have 2 ergs! (a model B and a C). I just can't bear to part with the B, since that's what I used in school. I use both, just depending on the mood and the accessability in my messy garage.
