I've heard that if a man does not blow his own horn occasionly, there is sure to be someone who will come along and use it as a spittoon. I don't know Ranger. But he can't be all bad. At least, I have never seen him write disparaging remarks in this forum demeaning the old and the slow who only try to maintain good health.
kimchitom, 73, Lwt, 2K: 8:57.5.

Don't know why. The ones who disagree, I suspect, are not just rowing for their health. They are competing, and so have to deal with issues of relative achievement, etc. This is hard psychologically for some people. So they attack others in order to cover up their own insecurities and anxieties. Too bad.

My interest in athletics for the last 35 years, longer than many here have even lived (!), has been entirely a matter of maintaining health. I was a competitive athlete until I was 20 or so (in many sports); after that, I was exactly a slow, old marathon runner. I don't coach rowing, or whatever, like many of the prominent voices on this forum. I am an English professor! I study poetry for a living.

Nonetheless, I am not unfamiliar or uncommitted to physical fitness and the active life. I come from a family of physical educators. My father, Thomas Kirk Cureton, Jr., is often called "the father of physical fitness." He laid the scientific foundation of much of the work that is now done in kinesiology. He was the scientific member on John Kennedy's sports fitness council in the 1960s. He was a scientific consultant to all of the Olympic games from 1936-1980 or so. He is in the swimming hall of fame. Jim Councilman, the great Indiana swim coach, mentor to scores of Olympians, was my father's student. My father ran a laboratory, adult fitness program, youth fitness camp, and other things, during his tenure as a professor at the Univerisity of Illinois from 1940-1970 (I used to go over to his lab and use the fitness machines, one of which was an old wood rowing machine!). He wrote the Red Cross life saving manual. He designed all of the fitness tests that were used in the public schools during the 1960s and beyond. My brother founded and has headed the kinesiology department at the University of Georgia for the last 30 years, and is also a leader in the field. My mother is also a physical educator and was one of the first to lead community fitness classes for older women in the YMCA in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, during the entire course of her life, some 30 years. She was still leading the classes when she was 60 years old. My father was still competing in masters swimming until he was 85, and held several of the masters swimming world records. I have done 1-2 hours of exercise daily for my entire life. It is just a part of my lifestyle and background. I have run about 30 marathons.

I am very sympathetic and supportive of anyone who does daily physical work. It is one of the great boons of an enjoyable and satisfying life. The is no value higher than good health and well being.

The erg is a wonderful piece of exercise equipment. My son and wife now row on it. This last year, even my 88-year-old mother started to row. Her nursing home will not buy an erg for their exercise room, so she is going to buy one her self and donate it to the home! My mother played tennis until she was 80. She still swims several times a day. The 90s women at WIRC etter watch out! My mom is pretty competitive. She just might get the itch to race!

Go, granny, go!

ranger

This should read "a week." If she swam several times a day, she _really_ would be an active granny!

ranger

Dude, good on ya man!

I, like the previous poster, haven't seen you say anything that i believe is inappropriate (but saying that, i'm not on these forums THAT MUCH!) even if you had i'd still hold huge respect for someone that can row (or has rowed!) that fast for their age.

And i reckon if i held a World Record i'd prolly brag about it now and then, i mean you've spent all that time training and busting ya guts to reach it, why not be proud of it and show it off a bit.

And best of luck with your row in Indy. Will you be going to Boston this year? It'll be my first (all teh way from New Zealand) so would be good to chee ya on!

Peace

There may be some general misunderstanding about what the general expectatons are of a sponsored athelete, over-and-above athletic performance.

You don't bad-mouth the sponsor. On the podium, you show the colors- with a clean jersey if possible, or at least zip up and neatren the one you have. You make sure the sponsors logo is visible front-and-center at any interview, appearance, etc.

You never see, in public, Tiger Woods or Lance Armstrong without a prominent Nike logo and you would be very hard pressed to hear either of those guys ciriticize any of their sponsors, past sponsors, or potential sponsor THEY ARE NEGOTIATING WITH.

This is as much a part of athletics as training and competing.

I think the members of the USIRT probably understand this at some level, Ranger and Rupp might not understand it or possibly don't accept it.

Ed

When C2 starts giving me 5 million a year I'll be glad to have my picture taken with a C2 logo on my jersey.

Anyway if you want to look at the language and attitudes on this forum, speaking of Rich vs nemesis etc, there is not much credence for who C2 selects and doesn't select for the team.
What 2K time in the 50-54 Woman Lwt is the equivalent of your PB Ranger

I assumed that the selection would be fair and based on the 2K times submitted, so what was there to object to?

It seems that this is not at all the case, and I do indeed object to this. So I am now voicing my opinion.

C2 is not my sponsor. I applied for their sponsorship but they declined the application.

ranger
