On Water Competiton

We are now on the best of on water season (at least in the northern hemisphere). As we are not really talking about PBs, I'll give this new thread a try:<br />No matter what kind of on water regatta or which level you are rowing, if you feel proud about the result, this is the place to brag about it!!

Just to start: I feel very proud about my results this weekend:<br />After 18 years not competeing, I have returned (as a master) with the CEU Team to the Catalan Rowing Championship, which took place in Banyoles (1992 olympic rowing site) with the following results:<br />Coxless pairs with my friend Polaco (Jaime Ros): 2nd (1st and 3rd place also for CEU!!)<br />Eight: 3rd (there were only 3 master eights registered) <br />Coxless four with Polaco, Pep Ventosa end Jesús Esteban (Estibi): GOLD!<br />And finally the best of all:<br />Mixed double scull in the first ever mixed championship competition in Spain:: GOLD with my wife Berta!! <br />Today I feel quite exhausted, but VERY GOOD!<br />Next weekend, Spanish Championship in Vitoria, we'll be there with the coxed four and eight, and try to keep it going!!<br /><br />Have a good row!

Sounds like a great weekend!! Congratulations!! Particularly the mixed double scull - well done Berta. Hope that the next weekend went well too. <br /><br />I would love to return to competitive rowing, but now live a long way from the main rowing areas and also have 2 children to slow me down!! Maybe in a few years time!

For once on my lake there's a 1000m course laid for Dragon boats; sculled the length of it, round paddle boats and with occasional stops for breath, and it took me 4½ minutes and about 98 strokes in a slight headwind. Felt like death but recovered quite quick so reasonably happy, not to say surprised. Can't lay any claims to strength or fitness, so I reckon my technique must be absolutely perfect. Or more likely it's not really 1km, must check.

There we go again:<br />Spanish Championships in Legutiano (Alava):<br />Silver in coxed four and:<br />G O L D in the eight. <br /> <br />Really great feeling after the "poor result" of last week, and after 18 years without attending t a Spanish championship!<br />Regreattabily no mixed boats this time.<br />CEU-Barcelona made 7 medals out of 9 registered crews, not bad for a quite modest rowing club.<br /><br />BTW, CEU-barcelona has just published its web-site in German, English version is coming soon!<br /><br />Have a good row!!

Nice job. Sorry to have missed you. I would have loved to meet you. This is where I row every day. How did you like our "creek"? We row over from California Yacht Club in the Marina. Sometimes it's a real adventure rowing in as you're exposed to the open ocean there for about 250 meters. You can get some really good splits on your speed coach surfing in some mornings. I'm embarrassed to say that I was supposed to row in a mixed quad in the afternoon and I showed up a few minutes late. Someone replaced me in the boat. They won by .4 seconds.<br /><br />-Don

All of the murals on the banks show all the different crews that have been on that water. Nice touch.<br /><br />The open water thing is a bit hectic. We got a slight taste of it being on the west side of the bridge down by the starting line. And that was in the canal, on the other side of the breakwater!!<br /><br />Dwayne

So if this is the place to brag about competition I can't pass up the opportunity. <br /><br />Honestly, I've had an amazing season in Wadham College, Oxford's Women's 1st VIII. Even I'm sort of astounded by it given that I'm back to rowing only a few months after 5 years out of the boat. I also kept being swapped from port to starboard, 7 to 6. Day to day, even race to race I never knew where I would be and that, I think, makes the crew's consistent success even more amazing.<br /><br />Women's Head of the River Race in London: finished 99th, won our division and beat every other oxbridge crew entered. <br /><br />Oxford City bumps: I was selected for our 1st VI, managed to go up 7 places on the river and won blades, meaning that we bumped (bumps racing is amazing) in every race. <br /><br />Chiswicke at Borne Regatta: won both the novice and senior 4 events. Two tankards!<br /><br />Twickenham regatta: won senior 4 heat by about 4 lengths and were disqualified due to some creative coxing, the crew we beat went on to stomp on their opposition in the final. Tough, but that's life. In senior 3 we made it to the final to be defeated in an incredibly close race. <br /><br />Summer VIII's at Oxford: went from 7th on the river to 5th. No small feat in the top division to go up that much.<br /><br />Henley Women's Regatta: bye into the 2nd round. Round 2: beat an oxford development crew, which when you consider they are supposed to be the best individuals from every college in the university it is remarkable that a single college crew was able to stomp on them. 3rd round: destroyed Leeds University's VIII. Quarterfinal: defeated by 1 2/3 lengths by Edinburgh University. It was a loss but a great race and we put up a scrappy fight, we were just outclassed which I have no trouble excepting when we've made it to the top 8 crews in HENLEY! This is, incidentally the farthest an oxbridge college VIII has made it that far in a decade and we lasted longer than any Oxford University crew in our division. <br /><br />So yes, as a crew we were very successful and had a lot of fun doing it! Now summer training begins in a rather stacked IV!

This weekend we have national championships, in my country. Although I am not in a decent shape allready (been stopped for more than 10 years), I managed (there were no more guys...lol) to get into an 8+ and a 4-. <br /><br />In the 4, it will be almost impossible to achieve something, since the rest of the crew is weaker than myself - the club is just chasing some points for the national rankings, here. But, in the 8, something might happen. Ahhhh... the last time was 14 years ago. I am thrilled to be in real rowing again.<br /><br />AM

(remador sounds quite Spanish to me )<br />Well, tell us about your results!<br /><br />BTW: this weekend we competed on a local reagtta of "llaguts" (traditional Catalan fishermen boats, 6 rowers, no rolling seats. Boats must weigh about 1 ton or two... ) in Cambrils. <br />500 m sprint with "ciaboga", this means start and finish at the same point, and turn at half distance. Although for most of us it was the first time on one of those boats, we managed to row the best time (3:04) out of 16! This time, my wife Berta was again on the boat, it was great fun!
