Hey there,

I signed up for CRASH-B; it'll be my first racing event ever (if I can get the day off work to make it, hopefully!) I was wondering, if you're willing to fly in from Europe, just how big is this thing??? Is it like, everyone from the C2 website shows up in Boston? I happen to be from the area, but are there a lot of people who fly in from overseas or otherwise take that long a trip to get to this thing?

I just started erging less than a month ago. If the competition is that serious... perhaps I should prepare to get my butt kicked.

-Marsha

Hey I'm only about 2 months into my rowing. From what I hear it is one of the biggest rowing events, along with the British one. I also understand that it's open to anyone and is a very friendly place to be.

Does anyone know if you can purchase PM3's at the event and if you can trade in your old PM2's?

Peter
Ha, it is the wimbledon of erging. Its the original erg competition and the official world championships. But it is definitly friendly enough for even the most novice of novices to attend. You'll be next to someone who like you is only racing for themselves. Theres a big printout at the end and only hten will you know how much you got beat or how much you did the beating. Definitly attend if you can, it's quite an experience.

edit: I know they sell ergs and dyno's there as well as rowing clothing, but I have no idea if they sell parts. Call ahead and tell them that you will be there and to bring you one and you will pay there. That way, you can get one for the US price instead of the UK price.

Here's an article about the 2004 CRASH-B. And an article about the 2003 CRASH-B. Hopefully, these narratives will give you a flavor for what it's like (I watched last year and will compete this year).

What boggles my mind is how a country with one-fifth the population of the US can attract some 17% more competitors (2700+ at BIRC 2004; 2300 at CRASH-B 2004), especially when the C2 erg comes from the US!

Rowing doesn't have the cache in the United States that it does over in Europe, especially in Britain.

In fact, in the U.S., rowing is perceived as an upper-class, hyper-Anglophile sport. Think of the connotations of "prep" schools (the American version of the Public Schools), the Ivy League (Harvard, Princeton, Yale, U. Pennsylvania, and other elite american colleges, etc.), old money, and large, tall dudes.

To the average American, it can be pretty intimidating.

Plus, rowing is hard as hell. Why erg when you go on the elliptical machine and yak away on the cellphone for a half-hour and call it a "workout"?

That's true Diesel, I read somewhere that 80% of male US population is now obese ( we are not far behind) so that cuts down the amount of guys who could erg.

Surely all your gyms over there have erg's don't they? Each city should set up comp's and regular races inter-gym rivalry etc. Then inter city races.

Come on get organised!

I don't think I've ever been to a gym in the Uk without an erg, and they are always Concept machines!

no way, I would say most american gyms do not have rowing machines. If they do, they are usually some sorry looking excuse for model c's. I agree with most of what diesal says about how rowing is veiwed, but would also like to add that it is a perspective that is changing gradually. Plus with the distance that a lot of people have to travel, a lot of people who row on the west coast and midwest don't go. Remember, we may have a lot more people, but we also have a lot more land. I'm actually going on a trip for warmer weather and flat water at that time, so i won't be attending this year, but in the past I know that the 4 hour trip from NY for me was a pain in the ass, and I am truthfully real close comparitively than most rowers in the US. If your from Philly, thats a 8 hour trip, all for a 6 minute race. So you get the idea I think.

Or do they give you one..?

..cuz my PM3 monitor just went on the fritz and probably won't be fixed before the race.

Thanks,
Marsha
