Olympic Rowing Medals

If you have been following the regatta's lately you will see that Canada has been the country that has come on the strongest lately. If they continue that trend and no reason they shouldn't than you are going to see them take the Gold Medals in mens 8, womans 8, womans 2 and 4 and also Mens 2 and possibly 4. If you want the silver or bronze than move to England or Germany. The USA team will be all found doped up on who the hell knows what. Just like the rest of all of their teams have been found. surprise surprise surprise they won all of those Gold medals before. Cheers

Geography lesson from a Northern Irishman ! Hope I've got this right, but it was what I was taught as a lad !! In physical geography terms, The British Isles is the group of islands made up of the island of Great Britain (that's the big one), Ireland (that's the next biggest one) plus a good sprinkling of littler ones (Isle of Man, Isle of White, Orkney etc etc). The political geography divisions are the UK and Ireland (sometimes referred to as Eire). The UK is made up of Scotland, England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Ireland/Eire is the rest of the island of Ireland when you take Northern Ireland out. And the reason for all the troubles of course......some would like to see Northern Ireland join Eire as one 'united Ireland'. Others of course are happy for N.Ireland to remain as part of the United Kingdom. And of course the UK has one Government (dear Tony) and Ireland has it's own, different currencies (Sterling and the Euro) etc etc. For Olympics the team that goes is referred to as GB or British but is actually short for Great Britain and Northern Ireland. You (who are old enough) may remember Mary Peters back in early 1970s winning a Gold in the Heptahlon (was it Hept back then? can't remember), a Northern Irish lady. Confusingly: In football (that's soccer) N.Ireland, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, England all have their own teams. That is why you won't see British soccer team at the Olympics as it would lead to FIFA questioning the separate status of the individual nations for the World and European Cups. In Rugby Union (my sport of choice) Ireland has always been a united team i.e. Northern Ireland and Ireland. In fact there is a strong inter-regional game (Northern Ireland is often referred to as Ulster, which is one of the four regions of the island of Ireland - Ulster, Munster, Lenster and Connaught). Rugby was never affected by the troubles......

And the answer is: Great Britain and Germany tie with 4 medals. Germany has more gold if there has to be a tie breaker, but note they have no medals in men's rowing. Romania lives up to its name with 3 golds. USA 2 medals (gold men's 8 and silver W8+) Canada 1 medal Aus 3 medals I hope everyone enjoyed their country's participation. Many great moments by countries that do not field a lot of boats.

There also seem to quite a few other countries that are having doping troubles with a wide variety of athletes. There does not seem to be any evidence of any wrong doing with the USA rowing team. Like many athletes they just seem to have good coaching and hard work/training to account for the accomplishments. Congratulations to all the winners, medalists and participants. David (Proud to see the USA win some medals in the rowing events.)

Mileypau has provided you with an accurate & concise breakdown of the confusing state of British sport at a national level! Calling me a 'Brit' is OK and wouldn't be taken with any offence. I'm also looking forward to Mathew Pinsent equalling Steve Redragraves 5 Golds in 2008!

How about the Ukraine womens Quad having their Bronze medal taken from them. As much as I support my fellow Aussies (who have since been awarded Bronze), the fact that one of the Ukraine rowers was disqualified following being tested positive to a banned substance which apparently is a part of a medication she reported to the authorities before the Athens Olympics commenced is ridiculous. With all this media focus on drugs in sport, you would have thought that those responsible for the testing of any banned substances should have picked up on this BEFORE the event, not after. I'm sure the Ukraine crew are feeling like they have been treated very unjustly, and I tend to agree.
