FAQ

Post by [old] KM_Rower » February 2nd, 2005, 7:18 pm

I am wondering if there is a way to figure out what I can pull for a 2k. For example if I pull a 1k or a 500m piece, is there a way of adding x number of seconds on the split. I want to know this so that when I pull the 2k I don't set my goal to high and end up pulling a crappy time.

Thanks

Standard running race prediction works like this:

T2 = T1 * (D2/D1)^1.0707

T2 = 7:35 (1500/2000)^1.0707 = 05:34 or 01:51/500M pace.

Good luck. Please let me know how accurate the prediction turns out.

Bert

KMR
The French protocol for very fit oarsmen (Olympic level) said do a 500 test a few days before the race, then do the four 500m bits at 91, 88, 88 and 90% of the 500 test speed.
This is a typical race strategy, which says, go off fast to get a good position and to get the endorphines circulating, then cool it and sit on the opposition. The "cool it" is essential - if you don't you die too soon. Then go in for the kill in the last 300 if you have to.
The three percent drop in speed corresponds to almost 10% in energy saved over the central 1000; it's this that does the trick.

I think the only way to tell how fast you can do a 2k is to do a 2k.

Using the French system, my 2k pace would be far too hard for me to maintain. I know because I tried. Racing 2k is very different from racing 500 or 1000m. You can get away with a lot in a shorter race, like using upper body power to compensate for weak legs, but the longer distance takes much more conditioning and is unforgiving of weak legs, cardio or lactate tolerance.

I can do a 500m in about 1:31, and I've done a 1000m as low as 3:13, but so far my only attempted 2k test was about 7:19, which is pretty slow for a heavyweight.

Good luck.

Well, I decided to forget the equation and just rowed the 2k. Although, I did try the equation for my 800m and 1600m time for running, and it worked exactly.
