Hello,

Can remember tweaking something behind my knee when I stood up off the erg a couple of weeks ago.

Now after 34minute gentle row I have got a big lump behind my knee - slightly sore. Lump goes down after couple of hours - Leg feels slightly tighter than usual when I stretch - hardly any pain.

Am puzzled about what odd lump might be - any ideas ?

Wasnt planning to go to Doctor - being a fully paid up card carrying middle aged male it just wouldnt do.

Bill

Bill,
Sounds like it might be a Baker's cyst. This is similar to a ganglion cyst that many people have over their wrists. Basically, it's a weak spot in the joint capsule that bulges out and backfills with synovial fluid (joint fluid) to form a firm "bulge" behind the knee. To the touch it feels "fluctuant" which is the feeling you get when you touch a water filled balloon. They generally cause stiffness, some limitation in motion, and occasionally moderate to severe pain. Get it checked. You may need a needle aspiration with steroid injection, or possible surgical removal. The wrists ganglions can spontaneously resolve, but the Baker's cysts usually are too big to resorb on their own.
Other possibilities in the differential diagnosis would be a popliteal artery aneurysm (pulsatile mass), a muscle herniation, or a tumor, all less likely, but again, see a competent Orthopedic Surgeon for a proper diagnosis.

Kevin
