On Sunday night, I experienced rather severe pain in my right upper calf (just below the knee), especially when I stood and put my weight on my right leg. On Monday I sort of limped around and finally did my 45 minute erg workout at a very leisurely pace with no noticable pain while on the erg. But when standing, walking, or moving the knee back and forth, the pain was still present. Before turning in on Monday night, I relented and took two Motrin tablets. I slept soundly and woke up today (Tuesday) with absolutely no calf pain. Was able to return to my usual effort level in my erg workout. Since the Motrin, no pain.

Has anyone else experienced this type of upper calf pain? I suspect the injury was caused when I carelessly kicked a heavy/clunky running shoe off my right foot on Sunday and extended my right calf too far forward with the kick.
It's a sad day when you have to exercise caution taking off your shoes.

I have had exactly the same kind of experience this week, although the pain lasted 2 days before magically disapearing last night, i put my pain down to a bad fall which put me out of sunday competition at Peterborough regatta, UK. The pain only manifested however, after a warm-up erg on the monday.

I hasten to add that i was not drunk when falling, i was however chasing naked ladies and obviously had my eyes on something other than the path.

Actually, I've had pain in the upper calf of my right leg several times in the past few months, usually on the right side. I don't know if it's tendon or muscle related, but it comes on suddenly (either by hyperextending my right leg or possibly improper position on the erg) and goes away just as suddenly (usually helped along by a Motrin or two).
