Hope the woolly knickers helped CaroleMac!! I should think you need them again now looking at the weather forecast for the North.

Well I'm back in the pond girls. At last the rower is back in its proper place after the major upheavals at home and the rellies and friends visiting over Christmas. Have just finished the last of the Christmas cake and am looking forward to getting back on track tomorrow. I've joined Fowl Play for the January Team Challenge (I hope, if efg got my PM ok) and have a lot of work to do to climb back up the DIAR team rankings.

Happy New Year, everyone!

I decided to get the new year off to a good start with my first ever marathon, which also put me over my first million meters.

I was just trying to get any sort of reasonable time on the marathon, to get the Nonathalon bonus points, but I was really quite happy with the result: 3hrs, 6min, and 55 secs. I felt pretty strong throughout, although the last 5k or so was tough because I really sped up then to stay under 3:07:00.

My Mom took care of my 10 month old girl, who had never been away from me for over an hour in her life. So my butt never had to leave the seat even once. I did take three fast drinks of water from a bottle, and probably should have taken more, but it seemed to throw off my rhythm and give me a bit of a cramp when I did. Anyway, I have a few new blisters and I think I will be sore in the morning, but I sure feel good about it now!

- Krysta
(Swamp Hen)

But, I did and I wore several bandaids. And, when I was learning to row outside, our whole group of rowers had miserable blisters on our hands. But, as time has gone on, I hardly grip the handle and bare hands are not a problem. I had a few callousses after a 1/2 marathon, though.

My advice would be to do whatever works now since you are a new rower...just stick with it for a while and then worry about the details. But, probably other people have better advice.
Anne

I have only rowed for a year so I am NOT an expert. BUT here's what has worked for me: I found I was getting blisters because I was gripping the handle too tight. Someone recommended holding it with my hands as if they were hooks. There is no need to GRIP it for dear life. The second cause of my blisters was the sweat from my hands causing my grip to slip. Now I put a pair of toddler socks on the handles to absorb the sweat and I haven't had a blister since.

I did try gloves at one point but I got blisters in different places and my hands were hot.

HOWEVER, the bottom line is to try things and go what works for you!

Happy Rowing!

Susan aka Wood Duck
