I am so impressed with the meters everyone is putting in. I haven't met my goals, but seeing every one else work so hard has given me renewed inspiration. Maybe I can get in 200k+ this month yet.

Margaret

Laurie, NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED!! Sorry to hear you got hurt, but Kudus to you for taking care of the gravestones. One of my other hobbies is Civil War re-enacting, and I spend a lot of time in old graveyards looking up names, stories, etc. Too many of our old historic graveyards are neglected and forgotten. Way to go! Rubber Ducky
Thanks for the encouraging thoughts...it's such a great cemetery--we've just started working on our bicentennial (in 2007) and are talking about having some re-enacters during the year. We have a lot of civil war graves, as well as many revolutionary war and war of 1812 graves. Every time I go there I learn something new....

Kudos to you too for your re-enacting! That must be a lot of fun. Once we get some of historical documents written up I can send you our civil war stories if you want.

And the family is very happy that we got the old gravestone moved. And my rowing is going well--better than my typing--so that's good news too!

Laurie
Yes, I'd be VERY interested in receiving a copy of the stories. When you start researching the hardship lives of the Civil War era, it is just fascinating. If you read the book, or saw the movie, COLD MOUNTAIN, those people depicted there were sort of typical, actually, of what life was like all across the country.

How's your hand and fingers doing?? After I wrote to you, I thought about this kind of pain-kiling creme (lidocain based), that the dermatologist uses when they are going to remove some moles or scrape off some growths..

It is VERY EXPENSIVE (like $60 a tube) but you rub it on your skin and it totally deadens any pain you feel in the SKIN... I use it in the summer for really bad mosquito bites, etc. Called LMX-4 (Lidocaine 4%), you can also ask for a prescription from your dermatoligst for a weaker mix that costs only around $20 bucks.

Can you believe how great this rowing competition is giong?? Keep rowing strong. Rubber Ducky
I've read Cold Mountain but have not seen the movie...I'll put that on my list. And wow that pain cream sounds perfect--I really squished my finger and the skin is PRETTY sore, I'll tell you.

And who are these Ancients? Do they have real lives or do they just row day and night? I've not been rowing nearly as much as I should, I need to get over this finger (it is sore I'm afraid) and get back on the erg.

I'll certainly pass along stories when I find them out! that will be fun research to do. We're launching a new cemetery website and it might have some of the info on it, I'll let you know that too. thanks!
Looking forward to the web site with the Graveyard info. Yes, the PAIN CREAM is wonderful... remember, if you can get your doc to write a prescription its way cheap.. but I think the "generic" versions' name is EMLA, not LMX. The costly kind is better, but you can just use more of the cheap and do the same thing.

NOT SURE who those Ancients are, but who cares.. WE ARE IN SECOND PLACE!! Some people must not have any work to do, all they seem to do all day is ROW!
We Ducks are not only world-class ROWERS, we are busy feathering our nexts and preening our lovely webbed feet, so we have less time to paddle. Ha ha.

Voodoo Girl - I wouldn't be doing anything on a broken finger myself. Last time I broke a toe I continue to train for a trialthon swim leg. Everytime I kicked off on a turn I rebroke it - you could hear it crunch in the water. I think the long term health of your finger is far more important than one Janurary.

On saying that I rowed 12K on the back of thumping headache and finding out the birds I left in Turkey died this afternoon

I don't know about everyone else but I am tired. I've rowed nearly 600,000 since the start of the HC. First there was the HC, then I decided to get to the million before three men at the gym, then I started a new training program, the VTRC and the CTC this month. Someone remind me why we bought a rower......

I've been so wrapped up with clocking the metres for the VTC that I have only just realised that I've only got another 30,865m to do before my 1st million! This month's challenge has really seen the metres flying past and is a great start to the new year!

Great rowing from the whole team - I still find it amazing that we can all motivate each other so well although very few of us have met another team member, and some are not even on the same continent! I think that a "half-way-through-the-challenge big team pat on the back" is in order and keep up the good work!

Apologies to all of my fellow Ducks (and Fowl Play team members) for not pulling my weight in the Challenge this last week or so. Lots of excuses could be used ( out of town, busy at work, painting the inside of my house, etc.), but the reality is that sometimes I just get LAZY!

You're all great inspiration-- keep up the good work! You even inspired me to greater effort in my training for the spring road racing (running) season. My boss and I have a friendly challenge going for the local 5K in May, and the whole town-- all 8000 of them, that is-- will be watching. The secret for me is to have a concrete goal I can mark on the calendar, so adding up the meters I need before the end of the season should help.

Just an aside to Kelebek-- what's the story on the birds in Turkey? They weren't ducks. were they? My condolences on their demise.

Go Ducks!
I can blame it on being my first ever month of rowing, or my broken finger, but I also got kinda busy there in the middle and forgot to prioritize the erg, which was too bad. As I'm now in California visiting my new niece, whatever I've got now is going to have to be it. I think I got to almost 49K--wimpy compared to a lot of folks but hey, not bad for a first month I've decided.

Every little bit counts, and we're all humans with complicated lives, I think we're doing great!

Laurie

Hey Laurie!

I'm impressed that you rowed THAT many meters, considering what all you had going on. The finger pain would have done me in, I'm such a wimp.

And your last sentence sums it all up well. Ya did all right!

--Jen in WI

I got to 100K m today since re-starting my erg career (after at least 15 yr hiatus) on 12/27/05. Since some of those meters were in Dec., I'm not at 100K for the JVTC. I probably would have reached 100K for JVTC if I hadn't had that stomach bug last week, but I will definitely reach 90K.

It's really quiet around here. I guess that means everyone's hard at work on the erg, right?

Schenley

Hey Rubber Ducky! I hope you're feeling better soon.

And Schenley, nice job on hitting your goals! AND getting those boys rowing. I'm still working on Bob. I can't believe he only rowed that one day.

I'm sure glad I'm finally over that rotten cold that I had. At least I got over it enough that I'll break that 200K mark tomorrow that I was shooting for. I really didn't think I was going to do it, given how rotten I was feeling a couple of weeks ago. I missed rowing 3-4 days in a row twice.

Today I did over 22k today in 2 sessions. That's a big day for me. I usually shoot for about 45 mins and get 8-8.5k. I do most of my "hard" work during the first 30 mins. Tomorrow, I only have to do 4,500 meters to hit my goal, which is a good thing because Tuesday I won't be able to row. I'll be at my out-of-town clinic for a lonnnnng day. But who knows, maybe I'll feel like playing that Fish Game a tad after I get home. Geesh, I love that thing.

After this JVTC, I plan to use some other exercise equipment we've got around here besides the rower, just to work some different muscles. But, another 600k, and I'll have my second million meters done! And at this time last year, I didn't even know C2 existed!

Anyway, it's been a treat to be a part of Fowl Play and DIAR for the JVTC with y'all!

--Jen, proud to be a Duck and a Fowl Player

ARRGGG!!!
I hoped to have the chance for one last row this evening to boost the January total at the end, and instead I'm sitting in my office waiting for a baby to be born.

Congratulations to all of you on a great month of rowing!
