Way to go, Buffle!

I just finished mine and got over 33,000m. I printed out my certificate, and even though it's just a little ol' piece of paper, I'm kinda/sorta proud of it.

I did the Solstice row and the Blue Moon row, but not on the days they were to be done. Typical of a proctrastinator! So this one I actually got right, and it was fun.

How's that knee doing? I saw on the forum somewhere--someone used a bungee cord attached to the seat and the rowing frame in back of the seat to keep it from going too far forward (too keep their knee from bending too much). To keep from hyperextending your knee, you'd need one to go the other direction from the sounds of it, and I'm not sure if that would be helpful in any case. I've got a bad right knee, and I can tell if I slide too far forward on the recovery too often. Sooo, I can empathize with the knee problem.

Hope it gets better for ya!

--Jen in WI

P.S. Let me know if you get in the area of the WI Northwoods again, and we'll try to meet in the middle somewhere!

I'm done too! And looking forward to the next challenge - it's amazing what a little motivation can do.

Hey Snappy - we'll be rooting for ya!

Kudos to all of you that have finished! And thanks for all the encouragement you have sent my way! I can't wait for the next challenge. Maybe we'll continue in this thread when that one gets started.

Woolsmith, I'm not sure when I'll get up there next. At least there are lots of good places for ducks to land in, so I'm sure we'll find one of them!

Go Ducks!

Bufflehead

Thanks for the wishes Buffle. I'm afraid that I have to bail. I made it to 22k plus a little. I also managed to fall off the back of the rower, and land on my sprained knuckle (work related overuse injury). I'm ok, but its been a rough week, and I bailed. Lots going on, rough personally and professionally. I'll probably nto be able to do the holiday challenge, but maybe i'll try again for Valentine's or something? I will eventually get one of these challenges under my belt!

Hey Snappy - not to worry! You tried, and sometimes that's all we can do. Be sure to take good care of yourself. As Helga (the trainer from...) used to pound into my head, "nutrition and rest, nutrition and rest!" Maybe you just need to make sure you are getting some rest in there. Don't get discouraged - the Ducks are with you!

Ye Olde Buffle
I finished the challenge last night at 10 by rowing the last 3K. I'm surprised I didn't fall asleep right on the rower I was so tired!
Congratulations to all of you out there who finished it and way to go on those who tried but ran out of time (or got hurt - Snappy I hope you're feeling better)! Here we come Holiday Challenge!

Hi snappyrower!

Oh, what a bummer. But like Buffle said, hey, you tried, so you get the prize for the effort!

If it makes you feel any better, I stepped on my own hand in high school PE class once. Hurt the heck out of my hand and wrenched my shoulder as well. I was sitting down, tried to get up, lost my balance, stepped on my own hand. One of those weird, weird things that seem to happen to me on a regular basis. I should probably have training wheels on my rower!

Hope things get better for ya's soon!

--Jen

All right, Ducks! Who's up for the Holiday Challenge????

I'm going to give it my best. Unfortunately, I forgot all about having to give my own blood before my total knee replacement. The second unit will be drawn the day after Thanksgiving, so I doubt I will row that day - especially since they already got me today for one unit! I'll be a quart low!

Yes, it's true. The date is set - Dec. 19. That's why I have to get all my meters in by Dec. 18. To keep myself focused, I would like to post my progress on this thread. (That'll keep me accountable too.) With work and school, it's gonna be tight.

I really want to complete this thing. I just feel like I need to accomplish this goal before going in. Who knows how long it will be until I can row again. I'm actually planning on using the rower as a major part of my rehab. Of course I'll just be sliding back and forth on the seat for a while!

Okay then - any takers? Anybody out there want to do this challenge?

Ye Olde Buffle

If not, you may want to consider adding slides to your erg set-up, as this will allow you to do one-legged rowing. (The other leg sits comfortably on the floor and anchors you to a specific position relative to the floor...then as you work, the machine moves, instead of you.) I've been told that an athlete who has an injury to a limb can get some sort of "phantom" training effect on the injured limb by working the same limb on the opposite side. Check w/ your rehab people, but if true, you could avoid some of the deterioration that you would otherwise experience in your legs from ceasing rowing.

If you do searches on slides your should find info on the board, and I understand that Xeno's DVD's include the one-legged exercises for slides that he's used w/ us at the Iron Oarsman.

Best wishes on successful surgery and a full, complete and quick recovery!

Alissa

Hey Buffle!

Count me in for the Holiday Challenge, and I plan to get the 200,000 meters in on this one. I'm ALMOST at my first million meters, yay! And I actually hope to have that done before the Holiday Challenge starts. I never wanted a flippin' t-shirt so badly before in my life, geesh.

I'm sharpening up my whip, so you just be ready, Buffle! We'll keep ya going so's you get that Holiday Challenge done before your surgery.

I wish you the best with that knee, girl! I just got a copy of Xeno's DVD that shows the one-legged rowing. It does need to be done on the slides, so at least if you have to give the one knee a rest for a tad, you can at least keep everything else in reasonable shape and not lose any ground there.

And I like Alissa's info about "phantom" training effect. Makes sense when thinking of the phantom pain theory. I've read recently about how memories may not only be all the result of electrical impulses in the brain, but also some chemical "storage units" in the body might produce some memories as well. The human body is an amazing thing, hey?

So, stock up on some good foods that promote healing, get some good, quality proteins lined up, etc. Positive thoughts comin' atchya!

--Jen in cold, snow WI Northwoods. I think we got about 8" of snow yesterday. Love it!

I'm planning to do the Holiday Challenge (only the 100km level).

So far, November has been a wash for me since I had to vacate my home for a fumigation and I haven't quite got my schedule back into shape. I'm looking forward to starting over after Thanksgiving.
Hi to all:
As a new rower, I'm looking at the Christmas Challenge - looks doable at this point, at least the 100,000!! So count me in also. I'll be coming up with a "duck" name soon too.
Catherine (for now!)
