The rumors are apparently true. Canoeist really did cross over to "real" rowing as seen here in this short video. Viewer discretion is advised.

Canoeist in a rowboat

Don,

Yes, that is me in the #2 seat! It was a thrill to be there! Thanks for the video. I will send it to my coaches and team mates.

What a lousy stroke I have! That is the first time that I saw myself rowing. Now I know why the coach is always picking on me. I learned a lot in the last three months of how to row a boat, (such as hands down and away, back over before knees, etc.) but still have a long way to go.

This year we placed #11 out of 19 entries. We passed two boats during the race and it was a thrill. Next year, with four times the amount of time in a row boat for me, we hope to do better. Also, I hope to teach the other three in the boat how to train through the winter so they can get their 6K erg scores a bit closer to 21 minutes.

Cheers,

Paul Flack

Paul,

There were some CRI rowers watching near me on the bridge. I overheard them talking as you went by,

"Who's in that boat?"

"Some guy who's an international erg competitor showed up at the boathouse and pulled an incredible 6k time. They put him in the boat with like two months practice."

"Wow, It must be great to have someone in the boat who can pull like that."

If you keep at it everyone is going to want you in their boat.

-Don
In the days when I was still rowing on the water, one of my crew mates was always getting on me complaining that working on the erg was giving me bad habits. In our group, I had no counter complaint about not working out hard enough. Most of them were putting in several 16k days a week. There was even one fellow who would get there early, do 16k on the erg, and then row 16k on the water. There was a rumor that he often spent his afternoons playing golf. Since he was not retired, I often wondered how he found time to conduct his business. In his case, the erging apparently did not affect his form. It was impeccable.

Bob S.

Your timing at the catch didn't look too bad, but you are rowing the blade in and out very short, pretty cleanly (a good thing) for going as deep as you are.

Good to see that you have made it into a boat though....
