Is anyone planning to do this on e-row. I saw this posted on the Concept 2 web site under "Challenges". I am thinking of doing the 21k or possibly breaking it up into something like 2 x 10k, 4 x 5k, 21 x 1k, etc. If it was done as a 21k, it should take about 1 hour and 30 minutes or better to complete. 1 hours and 30 minutes is a 2:07 pace.

Next challenge:
SUMMER SOLSTICE ROW
June 21, 2004
In honor of the longest day of the year, we challenge you to a long row. Specifically, 21,000 meters. While you're at it, you may just as well row an additional 97 meters and make it an official half-marathon of 21,097 meters. Because it's summer, we will also allow on-water rowing in this challenge. You'll be able to download a special certificate and your name will be posted on the Solstice Challenge Honor Board.
Tes, I'm sort of thinking of doing it. My longest distance on the erg so far is just over an hour, so I'm a little concerned at being on the thing for two hours (at my pace). Boredom, bumache and backache to be combatted

Simon.

So far I have done every challenge that C2 has had, and am planning to do this one as well.
I also did a similar one of my one devising earlier this year - the Leap Day Row. I went 22904 m on Feb(2)-29-(20)04.

David

A concern of mine also is injury. I am really not a fan of the 1/2 marathon, but it may be good if I rowed 2 x 10k with several minutes of rest. I would use the rest to reload on Gatorade and/or water. Another idea I have is to do an hour of power (which would take me to about 16,000 meters), take a break, and crawl the rest of the way home (5000+ meters).

Another concern is the "boredom" issue. I will probably plan to avoid any sort of long distance, steady pace type rowing about 3 or so days leading to the 21st.

I am thinking of planning this for 1430 GMT, 0730 hours local; or, 0200 GMT (June 22, 2004), 1900 hours local.

If anyone is interested in rowing this, post a time of when you might be able to do it and maybe enough of us can accomondate.

Morning Folks!
I have just joined this board, right after getting my new erg set (a wedding gift)up last night on my PC.

I plan on doing this challange but...I have only been rowing for about 4 months (w/ a one month lapse recently during company and wedding). My times seems so abysmal (10K 52:55, 2k 10:07) compared to what I see posted. So, I was just going to start rowing on the 21st in the morning as I do and just keep going still I got my 21K in...no matter how long it took....

Is there anyone else out there who is as relatively new to this also? Or those who remember "just starting" and can give some encoragement...
Regards...
MKC

I'd join in, but Paul Flack wants to do it fast. Forget it man.

PULL PULL PULL PUSH SLAVE PUSH!! Whiiip, CRACK! You got blisters? Boo hoo hoo, pop em' and get back on the damn erg.

I lowered my cholesterol today!

Oh yeah... Mr Motivator

MKC, I've just started too (three weeks in) and, yes, the times are frightening.
OK, a certain amount of "suck it up" is called for -- it's an endurance test for the likes of us, after all, but....
I plan on breaking it down into a 10k, a 6k and a 5k with stretch and water breaks inbetween.

Simon

I probably will row 6 to 10 hours before Thomas.

I hope to be rowing with a time under 1:17. That doesn't mean that nobody else can row with me. We can row together and you can see how long you can stay on the same screen. It takes a fair bit of time to gain 1,000 meters even on someone rowing quite a bit slower. If I were rowing at a 1:50 pace and you were rowing at a 1:55 pace, it would take close to 20,000m before you were off the screen.

Cheers,

Paul Flack

I set a 1/2 marathon up for 1700 hours PST USA which is 0000 hours GMT. I am debating to break it up into 3 pieces which would consist of 8k, 7k, 6k (a workout I had done in the past at I think a 1:52 pace). I would like to have the session done in 90 minutes, which is a 2:07 average pace. The difference between a 1:52 and 2:07 is 9 minutes 15 seconds. So, if I took a 5 minute break after 8k and a 4 minute break after 7k, I would be done in the 90 minutes. I would use the rest to rehydrate, stand-up and stretch, etc.

I might do an hour of power with Pedro later today. I will see how that goes.

Thomas - I like the 8K, 7K, 6K idea, as it turns the row into three long intervals which can be done at a faster pace. I should be able to keep up with you, at least for the first two intervals. Maybe we can make the rest periods something like 3 minutes and 6 minutes, or 4 and 5? I won't need a rest after 8K, but after 15K I will.

Another thought is to break it up into smaller intervals with less rest (1 or 2 minutes). For instance, get the first 10K out of the way and then do 4K, 4K, 3K, each of which will go by quickly and could be done at different paces, for variety.

I'm planning to do it. Yesterday, I did a half half marathon, 10546 meters, just to see how it felt. I'm hoping to break 100 minutes for my first HM, and I did my 1/4M
in just under 48 minutes. I started slow, but I finished close to my 2K pace. (1:55/500). And it hardly hurt at all. If I can lay back for the first 10K, and conserve my gumption, the last 10,097 meters should only hurt like hell. That's my plan, anyway.

Sorry Doug but I had to change the time for the 1/2 marathon to 0730 PST (1430 GMT). Another committment has gotten in the way of doing it at 1700 PST (0000 hours).
