Heart Rate Recovery Time

It would be nice if the PM5 could display information on your heart rate recovery after a workout.

You can see this during interval breaks. HR usually drops about 30 a minute.

If you flip the monitor to Just Row, then it will keep showing your heart rate.

Already been suggested, at the end of the row the PM5 could start a timer and also it has the ability to graph your HR decay. You could set your recovered HR like at say 120bpm and the timer would stop when it hits it.

Make the whole thing an option for when and if you want to use it.

Nicer than having to grab the stopwatch when your exhausted and loosing a couple of seconds pressing the start button.

Its been a while since I did a test, it used to take about 2 minutes 30 sec to drop out of the 180's to 116 but you will notice the longer you keep the HR in the top end the longer the recovery.

The PM5 could essentially now run a pretty accurate fitness test now if it was implemented in the monitor Firmware based on your stats.

Unfortunately with the Concept 2 made in the USA, the first person that croaks while doing the "Fitness Test" will probably result in a Law Suite because the rower obviously killed them because it "Made them do it".

I would vote for the Recovery time as well. I got started rowing during cardiac rehab from a quad bypass. The ability to look at historical recovery times would be really beneficial. I see that the log has heart rate during the row but as soon as you stop, so does the heart rate logging.

I once had a look at the research article where the idea of testing heart rate recovery was originally suggested/tested. In the test protocol they used in that project, the subjects did not stop completely during the recovery phase. They kept walking slowly, at a speed of 4-5 km/h, if I remember correctly.

Which means that if you want to log your heart rate recovery, you could actually just add a cooldown interval to the end of the session and row at low intensity. Then your heart rate during this cooldown interval would be logged, and you would be able to calculate your heart rate recovery afterwards when looking at the graphs in the online logbook.

Yeah it would be a cool option.

There is a number of things that could be added for the more serious rowers out there.

What I would suggest is TWO versions of firmware. All the PM5's leave the factory with the current version but those wanting more will find an "Advanced" version on the Concept 2 website if they look for it.

Most serious rowers who are really into the rowing end up here on the Forum or get deep enough into it to discover the second firmware version and install it on the monitor.

Probably 90% of the PM3 and PM4 monitors I get to service have never even had the firmware updated. Most people just "Play" on the concept 2 rower but there is a core that can and want to use it as a serious training tool.

Drop the "Games" options and add a menu for serious users of the Erg instead.

I know this is an old thread but we all have some time on our hands... could you point me to the advanced firmware... I do update whenever I am told a new version is available is this what you mean or is there another "secret" version

HAHA. Muddled use of the subjunctive mood gets em every time!

What Carl meant to write [be understood to have written without actually doing so]:

I suggest TWO versions of firmware, All the PM5s would leave the factory with the current version but those wanting more would find an ‘Advanced’ version on the Concept 2 website if they were to look for it.

How many woulds could a wouldchuck would if a wouldchuck could would would?

N.B.: MD’s post is a necropost [reply to a dead thread], an ittybitty foxpaw neither encouraged nor tolerated by most forums (see ‘Advanced’ Forum FAQ). 🤔

Why? Why did you bump a piace of ancient history (that ain't even about firmware) to ask that? Start a new thread, if you must.

BTW, Concept2 never pre-announce new firmware nor new PMx hardware before it's generally available.
