Model D PM5 sometimes fails to record row

Post by wkstevens » May 18th, 2021, 1:20 pm

I've been rowing a model D for about a year. Occasionally a row will seem to save as usual to the PM5 but the logbook will show a 0m workout. This has happened with a bluetooth connection between my iPhone and PM5, and more recently even when I hardwire connect my iPhone to the PM5 with a USB cable.

I have had this happen 5-10 times in the last 13 months, fortunately mostly after relatively short rows (~5K) thankfully.

Does this happen to anyone else? Is there a fix to avoid this issue?

Thanks,
Bill S.

  1. Update the firmware on your PM5 to
    • Version 207 (released October 2020)
    • Version 169 (released September 2020)
    • Version 31 (released September 2020)
as appropriate for your PM5 model.

  2. ALWAYS, always, always press the [BACK] button when you're done with a workout, always.
  3. Use Ergdata on your phone to record and log what you're rowing.
  4. Use Bluetooth LE (BTLE) to connect to your PM5, it's more reliable than any USB cable. Just make sure your PM5 isn't paired for plain old Bluetooth.

Citroen --- Thanks for the suggestions. I just tried updating my firmware using a USB thumb drive. I successfully downloaded updates 207, 169 and 31 to the drive but when I connected the thumb drive to my PM5, I could not find the option to update the firmware. I know I have done this previously; is there some trick required to get the firmware to update from a thumb drive? Sorry for the perhaps stupid question.

And while I'm at it, here's another question for you. When you say "ALWAYS, always, always press the [BACK] button when you're done with a workout, always.", where exactly is this {BACK} button? On the PM5? On the iPhone?

Get a Windows 10 laptop, download the C2 Utility and update it via a USB cable to the PM5.

Bugger, they renamed [BACK] to [MENU] on the PM5.

I had a few corrupted rows using BTLE. Reported it to Concept2, and got back a "known problem in ErgData, we're working on it" response from service. I switched to USB, no problems since then. Maybe it's coincidence.
