Can't update through flash drive due to hardware error

Post by MrWolf » August 18th, 2019, 2:51 pm

Hi all,

I would like to report a problem. Whenever I try to update my PM5 by flash drive I get the error message which I attached.
"Hard Fault Err - 2000F748..."
I am using a SanDisk Ultra Fit USB 3.1 Flash Drive (SDCZ430-128G). Formatted as per the requirement, but when I plug in, it always ends with the error above.
Any idea? Can it be the case that flash drive is supported?
The current firmware version is 163.

Any idea or help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Your PM5 only supports USB 2.0 sticks.

Use a printer cable connected directly to your laptop.

I always update the monitors via a USB cable using the latest utility downloaded from the C2 website and a PC.

Thanks Guys!

Some update: it seems PM5 completely destroyed my flash drive. Luckily SanDisk approved my request for a replacement.
It's a shame that concept2 is not testing their device compatibility with newer flash drives such as the one I've tried to use.

Anyway, I need to buy a cable first to update the firmware, but for everyone else: don't try this at home

Cheers

You can use a standard printer cable but the Concept 2 USB cable was the best for the PM3 and PM4 monitors because it couldn't be plugged the wrong way in due to the molded plastic extension on the cable plug.

The PM5 is different the socket is easier to see and pushing the cable in the wrong way pushes the socket into the board instead off trying to push it off the board. I have repaired countless PM3's with sockets pushed off the board.

You don't really need a flash drive connected to the PM5, it already has plenty of memory. The only real bonus is that it will remember your heartrate strap rather than having to connect each row.

The disadvantage of the USB Flash drive is it will eat your PM5 batteries.

When the PM5 was designed USB 2.0 was the current international standard. The PM5 is completely compatible with USB 2.0 flash drives. It would, most likely, take a hardware and firmware re-work to get it working with USB 3.0 devices.

Send an email to rowing@concept2.com to see if they know about this problem.

For future reference, the Sandisk Ultra Fit can work with the PM5, but it's one of those USB 3.1 miniature drives that generate enormous amounts of heat that easily self destructs and could easily destroy your equipment at the same time. So it's best to be avoided.

It doesn't produce enormous heat as it worked perfectly fine in my laptop used all day long and didn't kill itself. Not until I tried to use with PM5. USB 3.1 in theory is backward compatible, but we know what is the difference between theory and reality.
