Programming. Intervals. Lactate

Post by GJS » February 10th, 2017, 7:35 pm

Had some time off recently so have been able to dig into the literature. This is some of the better stuff I've found. Links to full papers, most of which are pretty accessible.

The training intensity distribution of elite athletes: (not Seiler!): https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl ... 21419/#B52

An excellent paper by the same pair: Polarised v HIIT v Threshold v High volume: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3912323/

Programming. Intervals. Lactate. Pt2

Intervals. A recent comprehensive review in two parts. Particular emphasis on VO2max, manipulation of work and rest periods to maximise time at VO2max. Are the intervals you're currently doing optimal? Programming considerations.

https://esthermorencos.files.wordpress. ... puzzle.pdf

The second part of that review, dealing with anaerobic intervals and programming, is a swine to link to but is available on pdf if you look.

A review on sprint intervals because I like them and I like it: http://www.fisioex.ufpr.br/resources/BE ... S-2010.pdf

(In case you worry that what's true for runners and cyclists may not necessarily apply to rowers, VO2 kinetics (fancy!) are broadly similar across those modalities: https://www.researchgate.net/publicatio ... _intensity
Not much research in this area, though.)

Programming. Intervals. Lactate. Pt3. Video inc!

A great talk bringing a lot of stuff together - programming, intervals, a possible rationale for not spending too much time at threshold - with emphasis on mitochondrial adaptations: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDY7YVpMrT0

(A somewhat readable paper  about mitochondria and the endurance athlete if you want some flesh on those mitochondrial bones: http://journals.lww.com/acsm-essr/Fullt ... ing.5.aspx)

Excellently clear presentation. Cheers.

In a similar vein ( if you like resistance work/ lifting), Chris Beardsley's Twitter is a torrent of easily digestible graphs:
