Card Reader - Which to buy? Omnikey or Athena

Post by KDreese » March 15th, 2009, 7:07 pm

I started using the C2D at my gym and wanted to buy a card and reader to track my progress and keep my workouts but I didnt know which reader to buy? They are both the same price and have the same description so I am a bit confused. I am a PC user and I thought I read somewhere that the Athena is for MAC so the Omnikey is for PC but the descriptions say both... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

K

Omnikey everytime. I've had one for ages works well for C2 I2C card and other smartcards (using the Omnikey driver on WinXP).

I was using Omnikey a while back, but when I tried it again recently, the LogCard Utility couldn't see it. I called C2 about it and found out that Omnikey didn't work with Mac OS 10.5, which I have on my desktop. I had a hunch that this was the case, since I vaguely remembered that I read that somewhere and for that reason had not installed 10.5 on my laptop. I don't remember for sure now, but I was probably using the LogCard only with the laptop and then transferring the spreadsheet to my desktop. With OS 10.4, there was no problem with the laptop. It is possible that I used Omnikey on the desktop as well — early on, since I had the reader for sometime before I upgraded the desktop to 10.5.

I suppose that I could have just continued using the laptop for the data, but I decided to spring for the Athena. It arrived a few days after I ordered it and it has been working fine. So it seems that K's comment about Athena being for the Mac is correct if OS 10.5 has been installed.

I will confirm and paraphrase what our web page says:
- Omnikey works for all versions of Windows as long as you get the drivers installed properly (sometimes takes a little work but once done works great).
- Omnikey works for OS 10.4 but NOT 10.5
- Athena works for 10.4, 10.5 and all versions of Windows.
