Rubbing sound

Hey Guys and Gals;

I just purchased a used model D.

There's a rubbing sound from the flywheel when starting up and and as it winds down.

Any ideas?

I removed the housing and the fly wheel, but couldn't see anything!?

There's a bit of 'play' in the axle, which i assume is normal, though pushing the axle to the extreme (2-3mm) seems to ease the rubbing sound (but mis-aligns the chain!).

Twisting the fly wheel housing seems to ease the sound too.

Any suggestions on a permanent fix?

Thank you in advance.

Peter
(Toronto).

p.s. i'll be looking for training suggestions later.

I had my well used model C apart to clean it today and there was no play at all in the fly wheel bearings axially or radially. If you really have 2-3 mm of slop they may need to be replaced or adjusted.

Thank you for your reply.

I spoke with Customer Service, a number of causes/solutions were offered.

I was 'overly' concerend about the lateral play in the axle, but was assured it should be of no concern.

I'm going to take one more look just to satisfy my curiosity.
